the best bass line there is
the best bass line there is
This is what I was talking about with the early New Order, although it's too short:
I've just released an album that has Jerry Jemmott guesting on three cuts, including "Grazing in the Grass" and a cover of the Allmans' "Southbound." He played bass on B. B. King's "The Thrill is Gone" and was part of King Curtis's band that did "Memphis Soul Stew" back in the late 60s'. He's one of the best-known old-school bassists alive. I produced the album and mixed him big, deep, and loud:

This is dance music but the bass is 'real,' and real awesome - Justice d.a.n.c.e.

A master of jazz bass, Scott LaFaro - check out any track with him, and especially with Bill Evans:

Scott LaFaro died at 25, but not without revolutionizing the bass first.

Great playlist this is turning into. I'll try to add to it as I hear suitable tracks here and there. Just heard another on the rado. Nick Glider's "Hot Child in the City":

Longview by Green Day
Great slow jam here. "Drift Away" by Dobie Gray (relation to Johnny unconfirmed):
I Can't Go For That - Hall and Oats
Black No. 1 by Type O Negative has not only a nice base line featured, but then Steele actually strums it like a rhythm guitar at parts which gives the whole sound a full bodied heavy quality.
"The Magnificent Seven"
The Clash. Starts out BAM right in your face.
Turd
anything with Les Claypool of Primus
anethstia (pulling teeth) featuring cliff burton from Kill Em All
If you want the bass mostly undiluted (skip the first 1:25 or so): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lf10U0yZrs

anything associated with Mike Watt
The best answer so far. Go buy Double Nickles on the Dime and listen to it all the way through while drinking a six pack on the porch.
