So why is Solinsky such a media whore if he is not even close to being the fastest runner?

He's done 11 days and he's only 492 miles in. Didn't it say he's supposed to do 50-60 per day? Is he planning on doing more as time goes on or what? I'd expect more of the opposite...
He would not be doing this stunt if his book had not just come out.

The man knows how to make a decent living. Running is his business, and he knows how to promote himself. There's no denying he's a celebrity, and if he inspires people to take up running and to get fit, then he's doing some good.
He'll be running through my town on his way to NYC, and I'm toying with the idea of running a few miles with him.
Despite the name I used here, I would say to answer "No" to the question "Is Dean a good runner?" is ridiculous. Is he an elite - no, probably not even in the ultra scene at this point. He is a waaay better than average runner and you could say he is an elite (self)promoter. Usain Bolt probably couldn't even finish a marathon now. Does that mean he isn't an elite runner?
I hate how Dean makes a mockery of elite athletes but to say he is talentless is a little narrow. Dean's great talent is his durability.
dang he's slow wrote:

Usain Bolt is an elite SPRINTER.
No way!
Is that lower than an elite JOGGER?
For someone who runs as much as Dean, why has he never run under 3 hours for a marathon? That's what makes me think he's talentless. Anyone else who puts in that amount of miles should slay the 3 hour mark.

He has. ING NYC Marathon 2007. 2h55m. Still not impressive for a PRO.

Spend a year running 100 miles a week at 10 minute pace and then see if you can run a marathon in 3 hours.

Not sure what you're trying to say here but I think most men would be able to run sub3 on 100mpw, even if it's 10min per mile.
people people people. dean is, by and large, (obviously) a publicity stunt. he knows how to expertly market himself. this isn't new. "talentless" acts exist in virtually every facet of american "entertainment" (sorry couldn't think of a better word). promotion and marketing trumps pure talent. welcome to life. i do believe it is a little extreme to say dean is "talentless"...i think he is a decent endurance athlete who apparently serves as the face of ultra-running. so be it. i can live with that. good for him. he's making money running...and you (and me) are not. at the end of the day i'll give credit to him just for the fact that he's figured out how to make a living through self-promoted endurance running. more power to him.
I think Dean is a very talented ultra-endurance athlete. I'd trade shoes with him in a heartbeat. He gets to run for a living and people fawn over him because of his feats. What's not to like? Of course, he's not "elite" in the sense of the word, but he's more well known than a Meb or many other Olympic-caliber tools.
