I was sick as a dog the very first day we brought our first child home from the hospital, and I had a hellish couple of years. This is VERY common.

The guy needs to be on Vit. D every winter, and liquid iron too. Not much sunlight in the winter in Oregon. This has nothing to do with his kids.

its becoming harder and harder to root for ritz.
spent one year in korea teaching kids age 5-13 during the peak of swine flu. most of my kids wore masks to class. i gave them high fives, let them borrow whatever they wanted, ate everything they handed to me (gullible huh?), etc. never once got sick.
You taught school for a year and didn't get sick, so you find it hard to root for Ritz because he has gotten sick often this winter?
I think that crosses the line between "unsympathetic to elite athletes' problems" and "abnormally lacking in empathy."

You don't follow. I have, but that is irrelevant.
Ritz's livelihood depends on getting sufficient sleep more than the average person. He should have the resources and means to ensure that it happens.
My guess is that Ritz would say that you don't follow. Many modern parents value some degree of participation in raising their children and don't feel that they can do that and still "ensure" that they get plenty of sleep and avoid stress.
He's probably trying to balance his health and his role as a parent and having a hard time. My guess is that 10 years from now he won't regret the decision to have been an engaged parent. On the other hand, chances are that he would regret it if he took the other route for the chance to be a little bit faster or wealthier.
