tough break, captain robbo. at this age you just cannot do new tricks without a lot of prep work.
72 for the week
M 1 (3.5M run/walk) still limping, very gradual, slow run
T 5 (6M run/walk w/stroller), limp mostly gone
W 10 (5M in 45 in the a.m and 42 in the p.m.) calf felt decent
Th 12 (6M w/stroller, 6M in 50:55)
F 14.5 (9.2M in 1:30, 3.2M right after in 25, 2.1M in 22)
Sa 14.6 (11.2M in 1:34 w/2x1.05M in 6:01,5:59 on grass; 3.1 w/stroller) went late to the park in the morning and ran around the long way but college team was still training so I couldn't help from jumping in an a couple intervals with two of the back of the pack guys. The intervals were very easy aerobically but I re-strained the calf on a dip on the second. So, my calf was sore in the same spot the rest of the day.
Su 14.4 (10.5M in 1:27. 3.9M w/stroller). In the morning run, the calf was sore at first and went very slow, but it felt better as I went along and I was doing easy sub 8 minute pace by the last 4 miles. The calf was not an issue later. Clearly, I pushed the calf close to the brink but it emerged stronger and the near term is bright.
I wrestled for a year in high school, started out getting pinned and finished with three straight victories, including one over our 154 lb varsity guy (I was 132 jv) and quit because track was starting. What rejuvenated me during the season, other than learning the moves, was going for a couple runs on the weekend during a break. From that point on, I felt great.
