I have two - a Browning Hi-Power 9mm and a Colt Gold Cup Nat'l Match .45 ACP.
I've used the latter in target competition and also bought it as an investment of sorts. It's a somewhat rare firearm and hand built to tighter tolerances than the other .45s. Used ones are currently listed for $1200+.
I have more than my share of handguns but if I had to choose one it would be the Glock 19. Like a half-marathon, it has the perfect balance of everything.

I wouldn't expect a true gun enthusiast to be stopped by such a clearly unconstitutional law.
Own a Ruger .22 revolver and also a Chinese made 7.62 semi that I have never shot.
I have been backpacking my whole life including a 2200 mile section of pct trail.
What do you use the gun for? Or are you just afraid of the dark and there is no place to plug in your nightlight?

They are putting themselves at a lot more risk as well.
9mm Sig for about $1000. There are much cheaper options, but if a situation came to where I needed to use it, I wanted the best product available.
Had it 6 years and used it for target practice once. Waste of money so far (and I wouldn't mind if it stays that way).
That's great that you've done so much backpacking and never needed one. You're a great example of the 1000s of backpackers that have never needed to carry. But it's not hard to think of scenarios where a gun would be useful. Better to carry and never have to use it than wish in that moment that you hadn't listened to all the anti-gun propaganda.
Has anyone here used the Ruger SR9C? I'm leaning towards that one.

Depends on the state the Natl park is in and what the gun laws are there.
Each national park has different laws. In Yellowstone you can carry but you'll be fined if you shoot.

i don't own a hand gun yet, but i plan to purchase a very nice 1911 later this year. no practical reason, just because i want one and have lots of extra money to spend on cool/badass stuff for me

If you want it for hiking, you might want to check out bear spray. It works better for stopping bears than a gun does, is never going to kill anything, is cheaper, and can be carried anywhere with no special permit. I imagine it would work pretty good on a person too. I have bear spray and I like the safety measure it provides, with no severe safety drawback.
