That's a big IF. Sols has a chance of running sub 26:40 just as Lagat has a chance of running sub 26:20 and getting the AR haha. Don't think either of them will though. I mean they could but nothing is a guarentee. P.S why did you have to capitalize the last sentence?

This is the mistake Ron Clarke made a lot. He'd time trial like a control line airplane when making money in Europe.
Then when the big race was on he'd be afraid to drag someone wlese to the a WR. In the end, he saatyed with the kickers and lost.
If I were Solinski, I'd push all I could and find out what my true limits were, and punish all those that ran with me. This is the year to learn and to create fear in his competitors. I think this guy is a star. You can't become too predictable.
Agree, but the upside to Solinsky is that he has been refining an Ethiopian-like kick in order to win medals. It's been coming together and by the end of last year his kick was on par with the greats.
A medal isn't too much of a stretch.
They only allow three Ethiopians and three Kenyans in the event at the Olympics.
Two guys have a bad day and he is 5th.
If Big Sol improves and just has a great race, a medal could be within reach.
Don't forget Zersenay Tadese too. If you have a fully fit Bekele, Sihine and Tadese then it will take a godly performance to get amongst them. Tadese also won't get it come down to a 400m sprint for the medals, if he's rolling then the last 5 or 6 laps will be a death march for anyone who dares go with him other than Bekele.
I have to check the stats later, but generally, 1 Kenyan does well, and the other 2 "bomb", fading hard in the last part of the race as they drop of the pace, no longer can help their strongest compatriot, etc. 2 Ethiopians run well and are in the hunt. 1 wild card (Etritrean, American, etc).
BUT, that doesn't matter so much. What matters is that Solinsky has shown he DOESN'T NEED for the Africans to have an "off" day to beat them. Chris can beat just about anyone in the world on their good day. Maybe there are still about 5 people in the world who on their BEST day, Chris never beats, but the chances of 3 guys having their best day will be rare.
Chris just needs everyone to have a good day and he can beat just about anyone.
Solinsky made real progress last year in his 5k fitness and tactics. If he continues to progress the next two years, he will be a factor in the Olympics. Tactically, he needs to learn how to win from both the front, and by following.
You are all crazy. How is he going to replicate the conditions of last year's Peyton Jordan when he had very good running conditions ("Rupp certified" if you will) and he had pace setters providing a nice even pace all the way through to the last 900M? Solinsky may be much improved as a 10K runner and still not get that much further below 26:59.

Tadese - injured? (He raced Dec. 31 but the report I read made it sound like he was still injured.)
If the USA championships come around, and these three are still all MIA ... doesn't Solinsky have to reconsider his and Schumacher's plan for 5000m in Daegu, waiting until London 2012 for the 10,000m? Wouldn't he at least try to double at the USATF meet?
He is already worried about the heat , probably not the 10k in Korea. London ?
Medal race is never even paced , crazy surges , african team tactics etc.
His goal , hang on , stay out of trouble , be there with a mile to go and ready to run sub 4.
This summer hopefully will test him to get ready for London.
World cross would have been good for him this year.
First of all, SolinskY. With a "Y".
I think his 5k focus gives him a distinct advantage in what will surely be a kicker's race. That makes him much more capable than our other potential sub-27 athletes.
On another note, I would LOVE to see Hall miss the marathon team, have a huge race to make the 10k team, then train for 10k fitness for the Olympics.
