Like I said was not doubting the date, and I also mentioned the possibility that Thompson could have ran a similarly fast wind aided time at a different meet, probably the UTEP meet that I attended, Wind aided times in El Paso or the state of Texas for that matter are not exactly a rare occurance... The Meet I attended was also kinda significant in that I believe it was the last 1500 meter race of Joe Falcons illustrious career...

I took a biomechanics grad class this year and they had us do some stuff on 100 m with 10 meter split times for four races.

It basically revealed that Baily ran 12.1 m/s which would be about .827 s for 10m or 27. mph. But it doesn't give Johnson's top speed in his 200. And the speed curve to predict a 150m time would be biased towards Bailey since he didn't have to run a curve to achieve the time that the model is based on. All this being said, I am guessing that Maurice Greene or Tim Montgomery hit a faster top speed. Or Bob Hayes on a good track.

Everything was fine up until Athens. Unless I am missing something you have done to manipulate the statistics, I have no idea where you got those numbers from. Two of them have never been run, period, under any conditions, and the other 3 did not occur at that meet.

Well, Obadele Thompson's second fastest wind-aided performance ever is listed as:

He has run 9.87 in South Africa. That's his PR. You may be thinking of this performance:

That is his fastest time ever recorded at El Paso.

Well, I don't know who would win, but I can tell you who wouldn't win and that is Michael Johnson. He's not a 100 meter runner folks, just face it. He dosen't have the type of fast twitch needed to keep up with the others (even with the flying start). However, of that list, given up to date career performance, Carl Lewis and Maurice Greene are the only two that can be mentioned in the same breath with Michael Johnson in terms of greatness.

Fast twitch? He was twitchin' pretty fast in that 19.32. A flying start makes a big difference. It is kinda hard to imagine him outdueling Carl Lewis, though.

Johnson's PR at 100m is 10.09

...But he's got the best sustainable top end speed of anyone to ever step foot on the track.

Of non drug users, I'd say Carl Lewis is the only one worthy to be mentioned.

Among women, that girl from Greece who beat Marion at the World Championships in 2001 maybe isn't on drugs (Zhanna Pintusevich-Block).

Jesse Owens needs to be mentioned--I think he did what he did 10.2 with no starting block (may be wrong there) on inferior track with inferior shoes. At any rate--supposing he wasn't on steroids (which I am not)--what would have Owens' time have been with modern equipment and FAT? It certainly would have been well under 10--but who can say how far under though? Still he has to be considered as one of the best--if not the best--and fastest of all time. And he should always be mentioned as one of the greatest long jumpers ever. He was so far ahead of everyone else that it makes me think he may have been on steroids-which was invented around 1895. If you want to count athletes even if they did drugs or not--then Owens cannot be left out of the conversation at all. I know that the underworld in sports was very interested in Owens even as a high school athlete from Ohio. Someone left $16,000 for him and his family back in the depression era on their porch. I have calculated what $16,000 would equate to in today's dollar. It would be around 2.5 million dollars. Imagine someone from the underworld leaving 2.5 million dollars on your doorstep. Of course, that underworld would have been very anti-Hitler--and pro for founding an Israeli state. Kind of reminds you of our drug culture today in track--doesn't it? You guys have to keep in mind that all these "10.2"s are really 10.44s.

A 10.0 and a 10.00 are not the same thing.

1936 had blocks . . . 1932 was the last Olympiad without blocks, but incidently had an experimental automatic timer, which is how the real William Carr got clocked a legit 46.28. Bob Hayes' mark was AUTO as well, 10.06 on a crummy cinder track. He ran 9.91 auto with wind that year.
