Unless your real name is Al Gore you did not invent periodization or interval training. Al Gore invented everything we now of, and many things we do not know of. Even though Al Gore is not what we would call athletic, this would not be reason enough to disqualify him from such inventions.

I think degrees in most of the STEM disciplines can be helpful and advantageous. However, getting a degree in history, philosophy, the arts, theater, etc. is usually idiotic.

I don't see why getting a degree in history, or many of the other humanities, is completely useless. You learn to write well, interpret, argue what you believe, understand human nature, communicate effectively, how to organize large amounts of information, and you may even learn something about the past that you can use to inspire yourself and others. What employer would not want someone with these skills (ok maybe the degree doesn't prepare you to be a cardiologist)? These types of majors open you up to a world of opportunities as far as careers are concerned, whereas I actually feel that some of the math/sciences keep one confined to a job relating to that sort of discipline.

The real reason a college degree means nothing is affirmative action. College used to be an institution in which the best and the brightest could reach their potential. Now anyone with the right ethnic credentials/skin color can get in.
It used to be said that everyone deserves a shot at getting into college. Unfortunately that phrase has mutated into "everyone deserves a college degree". Think about this. If everyone has a degree, then it is completely meaningless.
I own a medium-sized business and I personally interview candidates. I'm often amazed at how utterly stupid some college graduates are.
Did you know that there are actually some colleges here in the United States that have awarded degrees to people with Down's Syndrome? How would it feel to bust your ass for 4 years to get a degree and then see a retarded person next to you in line at commencement?

Well, in terms of making money upon graduation it is second only to chemical engineering, so accounting is certainly useful to someone who holds a degree in it. As far as social usefulness, it enables the complex transactions that characterize our modern economy to take place; the modern world is unimaginable without double-entry bookkeeping.
