Who uses a straight razor?

I use an electric razor. It was a Christmas gift, probably about $50. I have had it for 5 years. It provides a closer shave than any manual razor I have used (although I have never used a straight razor). I would guarantee that anyone using any type of manual razor has spent more than this during the last five years. Who is the puppet now you idiot?

As misguided as you are, Marines are serving the country at the risk of their lives, so I won't criticize your claim. Suffice it to say, safety razors suck because they go dull very quickly AND because of their very form, they jam up with hairs and they are designed to do that. A straight razor does not collect hair and it is open, so that you can sharpen it with a strop. I have been thinking about getting one for years.

I have actually thought about having laser hair removal on my face (sans eyebrows and lashes of course).

My wife has had her arms and legs done and said it was the best money ever spent.

I'm willing to consider all solutions. I am not currently happy with my cartridge razor and the closeness it gives me even when it is brand new. I am not sure having a sharpener is going to be any better.

I've tried a variety of electric razors and been unhappy with all of them. Not sure how anybody would use one for five years without replacing the cartridge heads. They dull just like any other razor.

It doesn't appear anybody uses a straight razor, so I haven't gotten any helpful suggestions. From what I can see at work (most of the ads are blocked as being in the category of weapons) a good straight razor runs about $300. I was thinking more in the $100 range. I'm a bit limited as to how much I can look at here.

I am leaning towards trying the safety razor option.

The barber shop I used to go would use a straight razor sometimes. It really is a better feeling shave (though the hot shaving cream they use helps too I think).

I've had several shaves with a straight razor at the barber shop. The hot shaving cream feels good but I never felt like I got that close of a shave. I always thought the 3 and 4 blade cartridges did a much better job. Luckily I don't have to shave too often. If you google around you will find info on using straight razors. It's really a good idea. It is a learning process though, when it comes to sharpening the blade. I don't do it, but maybe I will when I get around to it. I have no doubt that you could get a much closer shave from a properly sharpened straight razor, but it does take some initial work.

The poster is right on who said that most blade deterioration is due to corrosion. Dry the blade after use and don't store it in the bathroom (too humid). Razor companies don't even use very high-end cutlery steel, because of the corrosion factor. If they could get people to stop storing their blades in the bathroom, they could give us better razors, but they know they can't.
