Track and Field News ranking Pre 9th was generous. Liquori ran faster than Pre, and his next 6 times were faster than Pre's other 50000m race in 1975.

basically, had he lived and run the rest of the year, the relative ranking would have been meaningful.
what happened to Liquori in 1976?

I think he had a hip injury at the time of the OT.
His AR in the 5000m came in '77 BTW.

Thanks. To hear Jon Anderson comment so briefly with the look on his face I sense many many people have a poor sense of who Pre was. There is no denying the horrible decision he made to drive that night and it is hard to imagine what it is like to have been his friend or a family member of a person who left too young.

According to this, Pre was in the Florida Track Club? (it said FTC) next to his name and was also 146 pounds at only 5'9'', pretty heavy for a runner
I can understand those rankings for pre, having only two results in the year, but the logic of the others escapes me. Liquori had a lot of wins, but only once ran significantly under 13:30.

Liquori didn't drive like a drunken maniac, therefore he lived to run another day - in Aarhus, Oulu, London, Goteborg, and Stockholm.
Pre did not die. He ascended into heaven and will return one day to restore glory to American distance running.
look at the "3 mile" times as well - not all races in the us were a full 5k at this point

There is no logic to the others' arguments. They are all on the 'I hate Pre bandwagon'.

Look at Dixon 6-2, 170, didn't remember he was that large
