The practical purpose of a pickup truck as opposed to a regular car is to be able to offer to help the girl in the dorm or rental house near you to move when she needs to. That way, you can have some level of social interaction with her.

In most european and asian countries gas is $4/gallon. Only people who really need pick ups have them, almost all own construction or moving heavy things businesses. where i am now many farmers own micro pick ups like the size of a taurus. the practical purpose: hauling heavy shit. the typical american purpose: looking good. surprized?

Is that any different than someone who drives a sports car or a high end luxury car?

I haven't been to Europe since last year, but if I recall correctly, gas was much closer to $7/gallon?

To answer your first question, both Ford and Chevy make affordable trucks that are relatively durable. And at the risk of generalizing, most people who buy trucks are blue collar types who are either too stupid or stubborn to buy anything they perceive as being made by "them g-dam foreigners".

The business of misinterpretting patriotism goes back to the latter sentence. Most of those people look to dopes such as Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck for their definition of patriotism, yet they probably couldn't tell you how many states there are in the union or why the U.S. is at war.

Personally, I drive the best truck on the road: Honda Ridgeline (with a COEXIST bumper sticker).

First, Ridgeline is hardly a truck - it's more like a 21st century El Camino. When someone says "pickup truck" - I think of a truck that can handle a 4x8 foot sheet of plywood - lying flat.

You have a religion? Great. Keep it to yourself and allow others to have their beliefs (while also keeping their beliefs to themselves). Religion is the root of all the world's problems, so let's not bring it to light and stir the pot.

The sticker really has to do with your smug sense of enlightenment, you have the answers and by slapping a bumper sticker on your car you are sharing those answers with the poor benighted rest of us. It's nothing more than a feel-good gesture, by doing that you feel that you've contributed and don't have to roll up your sleeves and commit to any real work in that area. You probably write letters to the editor, too. Has anyone worth convincing changed their mind due to a simple bumper sticker slogan? Has anyone worth convincing changed their vote based on a yard sign or bumper sticker?

Addressing your points individually:

You're probably right, although I don't feel particularly smug as much as enlightened. By the way, I applaud your vocabulary and relevant use of "benighted". It's also very humble of you to acknowledge yourself as such.

What work needs to be done, and why should I have to roll up my sleeves to get everyone else to STFU about religion? If everyone would simply mind their own business in terms of religion, there'd be a lot less fighting. Conflict wouldn't be completely eradicated, but shelving public declarations of religious beliefs would go a long way.

You make a very good point here. For the record, I don't like those yard signs either. Politics is like religion; people should keep their political affiliations and views private. Everyone's chance to express themselves in that manner comes in the privacy of the voting booth.

Agreed. It is primarily a front wheel drive platform (with all wheel drive that kicks in when needed), no real truck is front wheel drive.

Common feature on the CRV and Element, but I don't know if it's offered on any of the Ridgeline models. My Ridgeline is rear wheel drive with in-cab, on-demand 4WD.

Granted the bed isn't very long, but it's a nice crew cab with very capable hauling and towing capacity.
