Must be a Scandinavia thing...
I was at the train station in Trondheim, Norway and asked the station attendant if he could recommend a good run. After a lengthy description of how to get to the top of a nearby Fjord I read about in my Let's Go I asked how far it was. "Oh, maybe 5k" was his reply. Perfect.
I took off diligently following his instructions and soon got lost. It wasn't that hard to find the trail though and soon I was back on track. It didn't take me long to realize that his mileage estimate was off by a good amount but it was such a beautiful trail I didn't mind.
Fast forward to the peak, exhausted, starving and a little over an hour out I made the turn for the station. Once I got going I couldn’t give up the hunt. I ended up drinking from the river, bumming food from any hiker I could find and running for almost two hours.
The station attendant was still there and, looking like death warmed over, I asked again how far he thought it was to the peak. "Like I said before about 15k." "15k! You told me it was 5k!" "Oh well, my mistake, I don’t often get a chance to practice my English. How was your run, beautiful no?" It's hard to get upset with the Norwegians and we both laughed off the fact that I was near death. He was right though, a beautiful run, I highly recommend it for those of you out there wanting to run a nice little 10k.

+/- 5k? :-)
I may have done part of that very same run. I've stayed a couple nights in Trondheim, down close to the water, and went for a run with a colleague who lived there. He took me up along the fiord on a trail that had beautiful views.
Yes, i did once when i was running in colorado a bear cornered me and f*** me in the ass at the sam e tim esome dog but humping my leg, was all i could do to get free and run away to find out a ryno had sucked my cock off........
As part of an 18 miler I got lost and ended up doing 24. 18 was a stretch for me at the time. It was at 3am and through the streets of a very urban area. True story.
I cannot go to Europe without this happening... recovery runs turn into long runs every single trip. Alas, I am an idiot.
YES!
didn't derek clayton regularly do this to up his mileage
When I was in high school, I set off to run about 12 miles. I got halfway around a lake and decided to continue rather than go back. Turns out I wasn't close to halfway and ended up doing about 22 miles. I remember running on the highway up and down some pretty good hills the last 4 miles avg about 6:40 pace.

Hahahah whoa thats pretty lost.
sorry, but that is Lost and Stupid.
That's what, over 3 hours of running in one day for a high schooler?
Stupid.
Stop and call your parents to pick you up.
OF course it could be BS, he mentions nothing about staying hydrated or needs for potty stops.
Visiting my brother in San Francisco, I had been doing pretty low mileage (30-40mpw) but felt like going for a long run so I mapped out where I could get in 10-13 miles. Decided about 1/3 of the way through that I could stretch it a little and get to the beach and head back and end up with 13-13.5 miles. On the way back I came out of Golden Gate Park at a different place than I'd come in, but found 17th Avenue soon enough. Unfortunately, the street I'd taken on the way out was 17th STREET, not avenue, and it took me a few miles before I realized my mistake. I consulted the maps on bus stops to find my way home, and ended up doing about 17-18 miles--all on the hilly streets of SF.
