Why do Americans drive cars with such poor fuel economy?

The Nissan Leaf is a zero emissions vehicle with a 100 mile range. Nissan is the 1st company that is able to mass produce a zero emissions vehicle profitably for sale at an affordable price. The assurance of longevity of the manufacturer and zero emissions vehicle is key to major fleet sales which will propel the build out of electric charging stations at schools, rest stops, work places, shopping centers, hotels, ... The Zero Emissions Revolution beings now.

I drive a car that has sucky gas mileage because it is really fun to drive. My mental well-being is made better for it, and I am definitely ok with getting about 8-10 mpg less than a comparable economical car.

That being said, if you don't really find driving to be an enjoyable task, I'm not sure why you would buy a car that has bad gas mileage.

Well, the US government is about to make its first offering of GM stock on the market.

Remember, GM had to accept about $50 billion of taxpayers money to survive - and the US treasury is about to attempt to get some return on this handout.

So with your admiration of the US vehicle industry, I presume you’ll be first in line to buy stock?

I drive a Toyota Tacoma pickup that gets 15-20. I wanted to get one of the diesel Mahindra pickups that was supposed to come to the US a year or so ago, and gets over 30mpg. But it is being strangled to death in gov't red tape. Why would the US govt want to let in that kind of competition, now that they are joined at the hip with GM & Chrysler, both of which sell lots of pickups?

Mahindra is just the beginning of the new Super India. The monster Sumitomo Mitsui Bank and super high tech Metal One Steel of Japan are major players in Mahindra. That's one hell of a deal for Mahindra's future success.
