Which sport have you clocked an Olympic B-standard performance in?
Harrassed? Abused? I don't think I did either. I'm merely suggesting that a different forum would be a good idea in order to avoid the hyenas that frequent Letsrun.
Honestly, after reading posts on Letsrun, did you think race walking would get positive response?
Did you really think the response to a race walker's results would be better received than other elite runners who get drilled for missing drug tests, advertising for Nissan, and, God forbid, running great times that aren't quite up to the Letsrun "World record or bust" expectations?
He's actually gotten a pretty respectful response. I'm just questioning if this is the forum to discuss race walking.

Doesn't T&FN cover race walking? It is considered part of track and field, or, as they call it abroad "athletics," at least according to the IAAF.

Well, now that you mention it T&FN does cover race walking. They just covered Barron's 41:50 10k at World Juniors in the latest issue.
I highly doubt that Mike wrote the "asshole" thing several posts back. For one thing he can't even spell the word. For another, I know he would rather say it to your face given the opportunity.
A racewalker is not a track and field "athlete." Nothing against Trevor. He may be a very fine young man. However, his "sport" of choice is silly. I really don't know if I could ever walk fast or not, but I know I never hope to do so.
You are incorrect.
The racewalks are an event in track and field at the olympic, WC and lower levels. Someone who competes (especially at an olympic 'B' Level) in an athletic event is an athlete.
I believe you need to study semantics a little bit.
the only thing is...he is going to have to tell his grandkids that he is a racewalker. I dont think i have the balls to do it on that basis alone.
Alan, seriously man, put some pants on. I find it strange I have to ask you that twice.
And you'll be encouraging your grandkids to anonymously tear down the accomplishments of others?

im not gonna lie walking as competition is kinda ridiculous but so is curling. i will give racewalking props though its way harder than running alot of skill involved, that 6:03 mile blows my mind, still its walking. idk i cant wrap my head around it
It's not like he was actually walking. It's just disguised running.
Oh really? Is it sad to know that Chris Solinsky ran 12:55 for the 5K? Or, if you're talking about the fact that he's in high school, is it sad to know Galen Rupp ran 13:37? Trevor's accomplishment here is damned impressive, regardless of whatever stupid point you're trying to make.
I happen to be good friends with someone who went to high school with Trevor, though I don't know him personally. His story is incredible. Congratulations Trevor, and keep up the great work.

Hey I did not write that. I was out on our cross country course putting our signs up with some of the guys on my team at that time. But I agree with who ever wrote it. :) That the kid has an Olympic B standard at a 20k, I have to ask do any of our super star 17 year old distance runners have a B Standard?
It does not matter whether you like it or not, or think it is a sport or event or anything else. What does matter is he is going to the Olympics and you are not.
The end.

This has to be the stupidest thing to ever be called "sport." I can't believe that we allow people to take up space at the olympics for this. I'd rather watch a potato sack race.
This is yet another reason that our sport (track and field, or athletics in the rest of the world) remains a joke. Even within it we turn against those who succeed.
As a track athlete, what's there not to like about this guy? He trains with incredible determination, races against the clock and often does it on the same courses that we do.
I know that you'd like to pretend there's a big difference, but to the average person flipping on their TV there is as much in common between a marathon and 20k racewalk as there is between an 800 and a marathon. (And physiologically they're right.)
This squabbling does nothing more that to make the sport sound like a bunch of whiny nimrods. I know very well that discus throwers don't spend their time crapping on your hammer throwers.
The only reason a runner makes fun of racewalkers is to make ourselves feel better about what we do. I'm sure we've all met plenty of people who ask us why we think running in circles is fun. So grow-up and stop acting as if you are anything great in a sport that allows a 6 hour marathon "runner" to be in the same race as a sub 2:10 runner.

Hi MSCoach,
I hope if you contacted me I would remember meeting you as well. Also, I would think that since you met me you would know I am passionate about ALL of track and field not just one event.
You wrote "I'm merely suggesting that a different forum would be a good idea in order to avoid the hyenas that frequent Letsrun."
Yes there do appear to be predatory scavengers on here who pretend to be worthless dregs of humanity but really they are just painfully awkward and bitter people about their own pathetic existences. And, yes, I am aware of that.
You wrote "Honestly, after reading posts on Letsrun, did you think race walking would get positive response?"
Yes and no. This is a good forum to broadcast such information as other events come to. There are both positive and negative responses. More positive then negative.
You wrote "Did you really think the response to a race walker's results would be better received than other elite runners who get drilled for missing drug tests, advertising for Nissan, and, God forbid, running great times that aren't quite up to the Letsrun "World record or bust" expectations?"
No, but knowing something might turn out badly or that there is a chance of failure or some sort of disapproval is not a reason to not celebrate an achievement. Fear of failure is not something to ascribe to. I fear very very little and I do not fear uniformed ignorant public scorn at all. Doing what is right is not just something we should do when it is convenient.
You wrote "He's actually gotten a pretty respectful response. I'm just questioning if this is the forum to discuss race walking.
Which makes the point perfectly that sharing the information was the right thing to do.
Oh and MSCoach. We are both Coach's we should stand on our integrity and honor. Anonymous posting are for children.
Stand for what you believe in - if you think your opinions are controversial then re think them and if you still stand by them them stand for them - in all instances.

Hey ill buy the guy a beer and tell him that his accomplishments are impressive. But to me, being a professional race walker is like being a kamakazi pilot that reaches the age of 80. Not something necessarily I would be proud of. And its not what I think of his accomplishments that matter. If he is worth his weight in salt, he'll be doing race walking because HE ENJOYS IT, not for the recognition and the pats on the back.
didnt they do a slow mo video and realize that everyone in the olympics racewalking cheated slightly?
Are you even posting on the right thread? Because your response makes no sense at all. Yes, those are compelling statements, but they do nothing to address the lousy behavior of those dumping on an elite racewalker. Are you OK with that or not?
