Actually i think you're wrong. He was excited about Leer setting a pr, not the time by itself. If someone is a fan of Leer, there's nothing wrong with getting excited about his improvements. It was worthy enough to post on letsrun.
The fact that it's mediocre compared to someone else's PR is a moot point.

Brian Sell was an "also ran" for years, before his training grew and he developed to an Olympic Marathoner. I can't wait til Leer runs 3:33 or so, and the same people who say "yawn" today will be saying tomorrow, "good job ol' chap; i knew he could do it all along."

Good comparison. He really is the Brian Sell of middle D. Small college roots, awesome stache. Unfortunately for Leer the US has more depth in mid D right now than they had in the marathon when Sell was big.
I am unsure of why anyone would bash this run>
Leer has never been known as anything above 1500 this indicates he is stronger than perhaps he ever was , this probably is a good news thing, as he never ran anything like this over a mile.

Bernard Shmlagat is a 5000m runner now.
That seems like a strong first showing at 3k. Looks like it was a relatively slow race with one fast African who waited to kick for the win. I'd like to see Leer take on some other Americans like Rupp over 3k. I bet he'd have a shot at beating Rupp given this performance.

I bet he would too, giving the odds of Rupp dropping out.
Seriously though...Leer is probably my favorite runner out there, but hes not beating Rupp over 3k. This was a good race for him buts its hardly exceptional on any level. What does this tell us? He possibly has more strength than ever, but he would be hard up to compete with the likes of Braun, Bauhs, and other younger US guys just about to join the ranks of the big time players.
And for the critics, no, I could never compete with anyone I just mentioned, and no, I probably didn't put in half the effort as anyone I have mentioned.

And good analysis of you too, regarding Marathoning vs. Mid-Distance right now.
I'll also add (as a former competitor of his in college), that he is a friendly competitor. I "raced" him in a 1500 a few years back at Oxy, and he outkicked the field to win in about 3:50 or 51 or so. I ran a PR that day--high 3:50's, and when the field was walking back towards the starting line to grab our gear, a friend comes up to me and congratulated me on a PR. Upon hearing that, Leer was also congratulatory and seemed genuinely glad for me. We went on to have a cool down together with a few others.
Now, I have never raced Webb, Lagat, Manzano, et al, but I did race Leer quite a bit from 1500-5k including XC, and this was typical behavior from him. It's sad when people give him a hard time on a PR, b/c I know for a fact, that he gets excited for others when they do well. Thus, it bugs me when I hear people putting him down.
Some people may think he ran an "average" time. Keep in mind, he's not a steeplechaser/ 5k guy, he's racing above his racing distance. A PR in a longer distance shows that his strength is growing--that's why this is important. The longer Leer can stay aerobic during his 1500m races, the better kick he will have. A PR in an aerobic race is good for his development.
he's still 200m meters behind the world record, so who cares. 7:49 is nothing to write home about. It is a dime a dozen. Last time I checked its okay to post good times, not average times. This is not a hobby joggers forum. Heck I could run a 7:49, and you dont see me posting this junk everywhere on letsrun. Stop wasting our time OP
