Mark Young will retire from his role as the Mark T. Young ’68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field at Yale.

How awesome to serve long enough and well enough to have your own job endowed in your honor.

Young steps down after XC season with Dave Shoehalter taking over. Young will still coach girls mid/long distance through the 2011 track season.

Harvard finally posted something about their incoming class last week:

AMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Harvard cross country team announced 20 freshmen will join the roster for the 2010 season. The Crimson opens its season Sept. 18 at the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in New York and has a total of seven scheduled meets in 2010.

"I am incredibly excited about both our men's and women's incoming classes," said Jason Saretsky, Director of Harvard Track and Field and Cross Country. "We bring in a great mix of middle distance and distance women who should be able to contribute to our program and our men's class boasts three runners who have broken the nine-minute mark in the two mile event, which should rank it as one of the best freshman classes in the nation."

The Harvard men placed sixth at the 2009 Ivy League Championships and turned in a 10th-place finish at the IC4A Championships. Daniel Chenoweth ’11 captured the individual Ivy League title and represented the Crimson at the NCAA Championships. The women placed fifth at the league championships and ninth at ECACs and had three runners, Claire Richardson ’11, Kailyn Kuzmuk ’12 and Sammy Silva ’13, earn all-region accolades. Both the men and the women received USTFCCCA team all-academic honors in 2009.

First weekend of Ivy competition. Cornell swept its annual dual-meet races with Army, 24-35 on the men's side and 15-50 (took the top ten spots) on the women's:

Adrien Dannemiller and Nate Edelman (fourth place at 2009 Heps) went 1-2 for Cornell. The Big Red were minus Matt De Silva (sr. captain, #2 runner for the team at last year's Heps) and Kevin Johnson (second Ivy frosh at 2009 Heps). Also, someone said Nick Wade was going to run cross this fall--didn't see him in the results. (An 800/1000 guy wouldn't ordinarily make a difference, but I'm reminded that Jimmy Wyner did okay in xc.)

Women also seemed to be minus some folks, but cruised anyway. Devin McMahon, the winner, is a frosh from WA who ran 10:44 for 3200 last year.

Both teams are scheduled to run at Colgate next week, then Paul Short two weeks later.

I think at most schools, the athletes fill out their press information, so it was probably the kid who got into Harvard with a 1250 that misspelled it rather than the institution of Harvard. Still funny though.

At the Harry Groves Invitational Princeton Men won over Georgetown and the Princeton Women came second to Georgetown. Cabral won the Mens race and Brian Leung came 5th I believe.

Nothing yet, as usual, from the Fordham Fiasco, where Penn ran today. I'm a Fordham alum and find it damned annoying that it *always* takes them hours (or, sometimes, days) to get results up. *Always*.

Nice run for the Penn guys: ~11secs. covering 1-5, with their fifth man coming in at almost exactly the time of their second finisher in the 2009 Heps.

For the Penn women, 65secs. between 1-5 (but Kovach spreads things out, of course)--not as fast as at last year's Heps.

Cornell ran about half of the women from their 42-member roster, but it looks like most/all of their top runners competed, including some of the returners who missed the opening meet.

Cornell men had this meet on their schedule, but DNC. Looks like both the men and the women are off next week, then run at Paul Short.
