My achilles problems began 9 years ago. For the past 4 it has moved into the tendonosis stage. In that time I competed in two Olympic Trials WITH the injury. I'm no longer competitive, but I'm getting older now and nearly Masters division so it doesn't matter much to me. Like you I have more fitness goals.
What I've found is that I can run slowly on flats rather flat-footed forever (60-70 miles worth weekly) and it doesn't seem to be doing any more damage. Coupled with weight-training It's kept my body fat really low and I still can eat virtually anything. I reduced any speedwork to an occasional undertaking and only about 2 miles worth in the middle of a mostly slow run, just to get a little better range of motion and lungs working (Add one Aqua-running segment weekly, too, for this benefit!). Initially I lost some ability, but then I stabilized and am always amazed when I jump in a 5k after 6 months and pop a 15:20 just goofing off. I don't run hills at all and I still get all the joys of running on the roads and woods.
Even with my foot pain, which comes and goes, I haven't found it to be debilitating or depressing. It's like a leg I lost in war or or on the sea - a good sacrifice for all the thrills (well..maybe "war" is a bad example, how about for a great cause)!
Furthermore, I find even with a chronic achilles injury, I can do more active things threefold more than people who are unfit with perfectly healthy feet.
