it is no way 100% safe when it comes to mental health problems.

You are ignorant. Cannabis is safer than alcohol and tobacco, and we push kids to use those instead. Whereas alcohol and tobacco use are associated with a myriad of health problems, cannabis is 100% safe. A recent study found that cannabis smokers were less likely to develop cancer than non-users.
If word got out that cannabis fights cancer, it would kill the trillion dollar cancer industry. ;)

Smoking pot is "100% safe" ?? What are you high???? Oh yeah, you probably are.
When you come down, and get some motivation, read this:

Brownies.
Seriously? What I'm saying is this: Just because something is illegal or not does not mean it is wrong or even that it is in the best interest of society for that thing to be illegal.
Here are two examples: At one time in our country's past women were not allowed to vote, many people (men and women) recognized the injustice of this rule and instead of saying "well there's a law; tough luck women" they fought for what was right. Secondly, there was another time in our past when whites and blacks were segregated in almost all aspects of society. Many people recognized the injustice of this and fought against it through protests. In fact, many people protested this by actually breaking the unjust laws (see Rosa Parks). The people involved in these protests did not simply accept the laws which were on the books and let that be the end of it, if they had we would all be worse off for it.
I don't say all this to put the pro pot crowd on the same level as women's suffrage or the civil rights movement because clearly it is not. I only say all this because I worry that you may carry this same attitude of "It's on the books and that's all that matters" for other issues and so I am trying to share with you my views. Hopefully I can enlighten you to the fact that if everyone espoused your philosophy this country and this world would be a much poorer place. Luckily for you an I though not everyone does.
I disagree with you, but it's really not a big deal.

Very true. But I can have a rum and coke (I'm over 21) and not have it go on my record. BIG difference.
So you are only worried about getting caught and having something go on your record? I am not mocking you. It is a concern, but the vast majority of us don't get caught.
Paulisdead, Are you seriously comparing legalizing pot to ending slavery and abuse against women? Seriously??
No one is being beaten or killed because pot is illegal. Smoking pot is a recreational activity that most kids grow out of. If you think laws related to legalizing it can be compared to abuses against fellow human beings, then you need to go back to 7th Grade.
And forgive me if you are in middle school. That would be the only good excuse for such a ridiculous comparison.
You apparently did not read his last paragraph.
Lots of people are being beaten and killed because weed is illegal. Have you heard of this little thing called the war on drugs.
Actually, I did take note of that one sentence in the last paragraph, but still felt that the premise of the post as a whole was disrespectful warranted a calling out.
Sport, you're kidding, right?

Man, Catnip, you need to settle down. It was not disrespectful in any measure to either of those things he mention. In fact, he was commending those involved for having an open mind. He is simply taking this guys view of "it's on the books as illegal so it must stay" and applying it to some over the top examples in order to better portray his blanketed statement. His point being that just because something is "illegal" on the books doesn't mean it is better for society - just like women's suffrage and ending segregation.
I'm sorry it somehow offended you, but it was an effective way to use an over-the-top example to help push an idea across. He clearly was not labeling the two things as equivalent in necessity as smoking pot, get over yourself.
You sir are a gentleman and a scholar. And to Catnip, I am not in middle school.
On a completely unrelated note: As I was writing this the meb commercial from visa which shows him making multiple convenience store stops during a road race just came on. At the very end it said "Meb, congratulations on your marathon win." Very Classy by Visa. Almost makes me want to switch from American Express.
Dearest Mr.ehhhh, perhaps you're right, I probably do need to consider getting over myself. I've been feeling rather triumphant lately and my enthusiasm for myself may have spilled over into my post.
Or perhaps you're wrong. As neither a woman nor a minority, perhaps you aren't in a position to pass judgment on what those groups deem as disrespect. And perhaps you're the one who needs to lighten up, Big Guy.
Historically, your posts suggest that the posture you've thrust yourself into is uncomfortable, and that you may need an attitude adjustment along with the realignment.
Last time I checked, LR was a place where different viewpoints could be expressed (unless of course those viewpoints related to Athletics West drug cheats, Brad Hudson, Duck Good-ole-boys,...). Paulisdead expressed his view, I expressed mine.
Paulisdead, I don't see any evidence of scholarly or gentlemanly behavior in ehhhh's post, and will stand by my original notion that while it was expressed well, your post lacked sensitivity. Over-the-top example or not, the legality of pot use and the legality of beating/killing another human being don't belong in the same conversation IMO.
