As a former captain at Newton North as well as being Jewish, I read the article and was underwhelmed by the hoopla. I agree with the above poster: sometimes invitationals bump into other commitments, whether they are religious in nature or scholastic (i.e AP's). It happens.

Also, in highschool we had our outdoor conference meet scheduled for the same day as an AP test, so every year we had guys miss the meet.

So does that mean any of them who wanted to run in college and hoped to make it to nationals had to do the 10,000m?
I went to high school in N. Carolina, and meets were always scheduled on both high holidays. If guys are observant enough to observe the sabbath "correctly," they would not be running track in the first place... like this guy said... no racing on saturday. After growing up in both North Carolina and Boston, I find it comical that this is even being made into an issue.

for a state championship, i would be sympathetic and think the state association should make accomodations in order to increase accessibility, but this meet means absolutely nothing.
these kids don't need another meet; the non-jews should be upset they have to race

Jews are free to start their own track association and keep their traditions if they want to. Nobody is stopping them. This isn't a Muslim country where only Islam is allowed, or Israel where they imprison 75% of the Muslims to keep them from voting. Americans should have meets on Sat, Sun, and whenever people decide.
Maybe now that it is 2009 AD, the Jews should change their traditions a bit to adapt to today's lifestyles.
Dhimmi laws allow Jews, Christians, etc to practice their religions under sharia law.

Just to qualify my statement, it is not a big deal assuming that the MSTCA actually considered the holiday as part of the decision process for the date, and concluded that this was the best possible date all things considered. It appears that this may have not been the case.
Agreed that this is an early meet; NNHS women used to skip these anyway in the paste.

That notion sounds way more Christian than Jewish to me, not that you care about details.
The answer is no, no such punishment. Believe it or don't, some people actually want to, choose to, take pleasure and pride from following rituals and exercising discipline in their observance of religion or tradition.
An analogy: is *your* soul condemned to hell for all eternity, if you jog the last mile of your turkey trot and finish 19th when your best effort would've netted you 14th? Of course not, don't be a drama queen. The race director doesn't give a rat's azz about your time or place, nor likely does anyone else but you. As long as you can live with yourself, feel free to Gallowalk the whole way.
For most of its years the Boston Marathon ran on April 19th except when it fell on a Sunday, then the race moved to Monday. It has been run through Newton, Ma on every day of the week, but never on a Sunday.
