It's a shitload of aerobic development. Rupp is running at a lower effort than everyone else in that race and that's why he can turn it on and run reasonably close to his maximum speed at the end. Geb has just barely cracked 50 for the quarter and he made a career of killing guys with 25-26sec final 200s.

Yeah, the early rounds of Nike Oregon Project were not full of successes. Dan Browne kinda sorta, but the rest, not so much.
Not sure what changed, but around the time Salazar switched things around and the Gouchers came to Portland, it's been a whole different story.
primarily it is having a coach backed very closely by Nike and getting top athletes. or maybe it's just his old school ways (insert emoticon).

The Rupp family, Oregon and Vin have made sure that everything was done both within NCAA rules; and paid for by the Rupp's.
The real joke is that the NCAA makes money off of the sport, off of all these athletes, and then prohibits them from making money...like say in being sponsored or taking prize money in the summers, with the threat of losing their college "amateurism."
Every single college athlete is a Pro athlete.
Only the NCAA is stealing their earnings.
Why?
It is the only way they can continue to make billions off of football and basket ball.
If football players at the NCAA level were allowed to get paid in relation to their worth -- rather than in scholarships -- where let's face it, the university isn't paying for these scholarships, the cost is passed onto the rest of the students...

So what, Portland, and Alberto discovered a local runner, and nurtured him, and he actually turned out to be good. If it was more than just a fluke of finding a genetic lottery winner, Alberto would have produced a few more Galen's before now, and one or two since.

Howarth- one of the nicest guys you will ever have the chance to meet. Average college runner who was the last to dip under 4 at ore when the most ever in a race accomplished the feat. Also ran well above his talent level. Drove Salazar nuts. The ladies loved him.
Ansberry- 28.01 for national title the year I was around the group. Family man. Heart of gold. Rocked his world in anything under 300m. Haha
Davis- By far the most talented of the group. Injuries curtailed what might have been an AR in the steeple.
Katon- talent coming out his ears. Free spirit cost him fast times.

Good analysis except that Geb has never actually cracked 50. He may claim so, but he never has. It's very believable that he never had the ability to break 50 if you look at his best 800 times.

I was thinking...has Ritz looked to him as a coach? Ritz stated he wants to be successful in the marathon, and that he wants success on the track. He also stated (in his flotrack interview) that he likes to race more than twice a year. This is what Salazar has been doing - having success at 10k-marathon, having his athletes race at shorter distances to get ready for the longer races (definitely racing more than just twice or three times a year). Does anyone know if Ritz has had a sit-down with Salazar? It seems in my mind they're perfect for each other. I'm sure Nike has pushed it...who knows.

How about this underdistance racing, especially by Rupp, Yoder-Begly and Goucher? Has that got anything to do with their great finishing kick?
I do agree that they likely rely on their aerobic base to kick down their opponents; they all started their kick from over 400m out (vs. a sprint-type kicker who would kick around 250m). But can aerobic base really explain Begly's victory over Flanagan? I think they must be doing some sprint-type training.

All these athletes are sitting and kicking because they are capable of running american records and that would make it even more suspicious.

i had the opportunity in '96 to train with his group in portland- tommy ansberry, jim howarth, chris katon, todd lewis, shannon lemora, etc. it was extremely focused training. he had it down to a science. there were NO DRUGS. none of that crap, and i was around some of these guys all the time. it was all periodization with mini goals, etc along the way. a favorite workout for him was 5 x 1200m on the catholic track in 3.05-3.15 with 3 min rest. 10x400m in 60 sec with 60 sec recovery was also very commonplace. 16, 12, 8, 4, 3, 2 was another good one. it is not some magical recipe. his group makes a goal and crosses every single t and dots every single i to make it happen. he gort every single thing he could out iof his athletes. hardnosed? you bet. no bs with that guy. you either produced, or you were gone. an impetus to perform well for anyone. figure out what works for you and stick to it. there is NO MAGIC TRAINING!
