With 600 meters to go at Pre, the camera showed the leaders and Rowbury was sitting in about 3rd and I really thought she was going to take it. Her rhythm looked good and she was just chilling. However, it was her first race of the season and she's clearly not race fit just yet. For her this is good news because it means once she gets race fit she will beat tough to beat.
And now she has some added motivation--Barringer, Willard...
Barringer will drill anyone in the 10K in 5 years.

I was thinking the same thing about Rowbury. She looked completely relaxed and form was spot on even with 400 to go. Even as she was getting passed by Alminova and Barringer on the last curve, her form was holding up very well...the turnover just was not there to go go go for a kick. Her first 1500...I am not worried with her dropping a 4:03. That's still fast!
Willard sat too far back, and let herself sit behind that other ethio girl a little long. She should have moved out and just followed Barringer on the third lap. Eh, she'll get it. I am sure she knows exactly what she did wrong and how to fix it next time. I would put my house on it that she'll dip under 4 this year if she's in a rabbited race. She ran down Wurth-Thomas and darn near ran down Alminova also. She had the 2nd fastest last 400 in the field behind JennyB.
Barringer....what the hell do we say? HOLY SHIT! I don't think anyone expected THAT. She didn't. She could have started the kick a little earlier and won the damn thing. This was completely uncharted water for her, so maybe she was just a tad hesitant, but then realized she still had something in the tank and nothing to lose. What a run. Smart moves throughout the race to be in good position.

Barringer's finish was amazing, I think she will hit 3:55 at some point in her career. I think she can hang with the Ethiopians and Kenyans in the 5 and 10 if she stays healthy.

3:55? Possible, I suppose, but that's a long way from where she is. Consider just how few women have broken 3:56 (20), and then consider how many have done so not at a (possibly shady) Chinese national championship meet (8), and how many weren't Eastern Bloc women in the 1980s (3), and you get an idea of what 3:55 really means.
Considering the Eastern European doping programs for women in the 1980s, and the fact that women respond more strongly to drugs (especially the introduction of male steroids), it's noteworthy that 3:56 has only been broken 230 times.

What's downright scary here is that because of the timing of the NCAAs versus Pre Classic, she probably just came down from altitude AND WASN'T EVEN READY TO RACE YET! Just imagine what that kick might have been if she'd had a couple of quick workouts at sea level to get her some leg speed (and this is only slightly tongue-in-cheek).
Forget about the SC and bring home the gold in the 1500.
Barringer has a PR .43 seconds faster than Rowbury, so I think you are a little off base saying it is debatable whether Rowbury matches Barringers time. She could do it as soon as next month over in Europe.
Barringer is ready to race. She ran Big 12s last week and has NCAAs this week. She has had a whole track season to race and focus, so unlike Rowbury who was just starting her season (and a 4:30 is a nice start), Barringer was ready to roll.
Barringers strength in the steeple will help her in the rounds of a championship 1500, but you need more than experience to survive the rounds. She is going to be a talent and Pre was a nice coming out party on national tv.
Rowbury closed in sub 62 in more than one fast race last year. Her speed is on par with all of these ladies and it will come as she continues with her season this year.
Major props to her for putting it out there at Prefontaine in her season debut!
I wonder if she still plans to run Cross Country this fall. I hope so. Would be cool to see her on the World Championship XC team too.
In the women's 1500, anyone who is capable of running sub-4 and can make the final has a chance. Olympic and WC 1500s are races and the best racer wins, ala Nancy Lagat who was and still is basically a 4 minute 1500 runner, but at the Olympics she ran a perfect race. I would also say a man that can run a 3:32 1500 has a shot at a medal ala Nick Willis.
What about Christin Wurth-Thomas? Why do people seem to forget her? Even the Flotrack interview talks about her lack of recognition. I would think she deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as these other women.
To me, Willard's 4:01 was the most suprising thing in the Pre 1500m. She has come a long, long way in her fitness from last year. It's hard to tell how good she could be now. She's a different runner.
Jenny B only suprised me a little, by going under 4:00. She seems to be able to put on that kick the last 50-80m if she needs it and shows more raw footspeed and quickness than the other two.
Shannon looks about the same as last year, which is very, very good. I think she needs to start thinking about taking command of her 1500m races with 500m to go, like Hicham El Guerrouj did.
So a golden league race with these 3 would look like Rowbury passing the rabbits with 500m to go, with Jenny and Anna close behind, but losing ground. Jenny and Anna fight it out with 300m to go, closing the gap with Shannon, with Anna leading Jenny into the final turn.
With 100m to go, Shannon is still leading Anna by 5m and Jenny by 7m.
Hard to pick the winner at this point, but it should be fun to watch!

Christin is fast and works hard but always seems to be lumbering and laboring like Donohue. They just don't have a smooth, sleek style like Shannon or Jenny.

I think if you look at her splits, and then at her explosiveness in the last 30 meters, I could see her getting down to 3:55. 4 seconds is huge at that level, and she'll need the perfect race to do it, but I think she can do it.
Wrong, I didn't say "now," I said "future." Learn to fucking read. Defar and Dibaba won't be in those events much beyond 2012.

i think barringer and willard can go 9:05 - 9:10 for the steeple and all 3 rowbury, barringer and willard can go 3:56 - 3:59 eventually for 1500 (and wurth can break 4 for 1500 as well in my opinion).
here is the problem with the 5 and 10k i think barringer can maybe in a few years run about 14:20, but she would still lose to dibaba and defar, lets say she could even exceed my optimistic expectations and run 14:10 pace for 11 and a half laps then they would still need to do at least a 56-57 last 400 to beat those 2.
the usa women are doing very well i think they are number 1 country in the world at 1500 and since in the last 3 years besides barringer only 2 woman (jamal and burka) have gone sub 4 for 1500 and the usa has 4 runners at 3:59, 4:00, 4:01 and another at 4:01. 2 medals in the 1500 are very realistic, and i think a silver and bronze in the steeple is very possible.
sure the usa woman could possibly like goucher and flanagan get a medal at 5 and 10k, but those distances it will be a lot harder besides defar and t. dibaba, abeylegesse, linet masai and a seemingly endless number of up and coming kenyan and ethiopians.
Hasay will drop a 3:56 by the time she is 25 years old in the 1500. She's got over 7 years, it will happen.
