Was Vin Lananna a good runner in his day? What were his prs & what/where did he run?

Are there any historians out there that can recognize any other names besides Ron Tabb Central Missouri State who scored in 72nd place with a 25:58 compared to Vincent's 142nd place in 28:15 for 8km?

C.W. Post must have had an impressive program if Vin was named Head Coach the year (1975) he graduated.

When he coached at Post they were pretty good. He had a bunch of local Islanders who worked and and improved a lot in college

To be fair, Tabb did get in the top 15 or so and made All American a couple of years later when the D2 meet was in Springfield, Mo.

28 plus minutes for 5 miles when the winner was in the 23's? Not good.

Well, at least Vin was better than Wetmore.

Roy Chernock was the Post coach until'75. Allen Dawson took over as head coach at that point and hired Lananna as his distance coach. I knew a couple of guys who ran for Lananna at Post and they were pretty competitive at their level.

In 1972, I was a camper at the Roy Chernock Cross Country Camp. I was in the "A" Bunk with kids who had medals from states or were good shots to do so. Johnny Biedrizcki (runner up in DII steeple and XC) was the counselor. The "B" group was the kids just about to break out and become really good. Vin was the counselor for this group. I was counselor for the "B" group the next year. These are kids with talent, motivation, and desire, just needing the least bit more knowledge, training, and coaching. It was a real challenge, and fun. I knew the kids in the B group my year, and they went on to great years. The week at camp was really a great jump start to the XC season. Vin had something special back then. Johnny and Vin were then seniors at CW Post under Roy's coaching. I do not recall Vin's times. He was a fun, smart guy, who was hard-working and knowledgeable.

Who cares? Often, the best coaches were not very good runners. In fact, I'm having a hard time thinking of a great coach who WAS a good runner! Lydiard was okay, Daniels wasn't bad (but was also good at shooting, horse-riding, fencing, and swimming...), apparently Lananna wasn't terrible, Bowerman was an okay 400m runner but not a good distance runner. I guess Dellinger was a good runner and a good coach.

Nobody is questioning whether Vin is a good coach or not. He is. The thread-starter was just wondering how good a runner he was, back in the day. Nobody but YOU is making the leap from that, to claiming a great coach had to be a great runner. Just you.

i was thinking the same thing last week in regards to vin\'s pr\'s but it was in the theory that coaches with a history of making amazing athletes are driven to success to make up for what they were unable to attain as an athlete.

not to be taken as a derogatory statement towards great coaches.

I have his prs in a book I have. I'll look in a bit.

I met Roy Chernock at the US Olympic training camp in Pullman, WA in 1970. He was one of the coaches there. He was highly regarded. I regarded him highly and that was as a 20 year-old from the sixties who didn't regard much of anyone highly. I suspect that Vin (who I regard highly now, but was younger than me in college) learned a lot from Roy.

I ran for Vin back in the early 90's. He told us he was a mediocre runner with little talent who trained really hard.

His best PR was a 9:07 Steeplechase in college. He also ran in the 4:40's for the mile in high school. This is not conjecture, the 9:07 PR is straight from Vin.

On a side note, back in 1992 we bet Vin he couldn't break 70 for a single 400 after he had us do a workout of 20x400 in 70 and taunted us for looking tired.

He took the bet, blazed a 64, and then limped around for a week.
