I say unlikely. He ran 12:59 in '05 and '06. Both were much later in the season that Reebok, so he was closer to peak shape. Three years may not be a lot if you're talking the difference between 26 and 29, but the difference between 31 and 34 is pretty substantial. You guys are asking him to pr by at least a full second at age 34 relatively early in the season.

Sydnee Maree held the American Record before BK. Sydnee was born in South Africa. Do we not consider him an American either at the time he set those records?
Lagat went to an American university and has lived in the US for a very long time.
Lagat's best time for the 5k is 12:59 set in July of 2006. Lagat is 34 years old. BK was 26 when he set the record.
I think Lagat's days of sub 13 5ks are behind him.
Rupp is 23 years old. His best 5k is 13:18, but he's also dabbled in the 10k. I think to beat BK's time you have to be a "Lagat-type" of runner. BK also has the US 3k record. I think Fam may have a chance as he seems to have that "I will succeed or die trying" attitude. He just needs to stop running the steeple for a bit.
Teg may have the best shot because as well all know...Teg doesn't run the 10k.

Less than 2 years ago he won the World Championships in 2 events. 2008 wasn't as good, but I think it is a bit soon to be making claims like this.

I don't understand what all this hype is about. Lagat will be lucky to run sub 13:05 on Sunday. Not that I have anything against my neighbor from Kaptel but I am being realistic of his chances. I know he is a great athlete and has the talent to go sub 12:58 but not right now. At best, on Sunday, he will finish 5th but more likely 7th. If he does about three 5k races in Europe this year, he could take the record down. In my opinion Lagat should have concentrated on 1500m where I think he has best chances of top three finish at the WCs. His win at 5k in 2007 was made possible because of the slow pace. The pace at Beijing is the norm at 5k so Lagat's wheels will fall apart...
As per Lagat's status as an athlete, he would still be considered a top 1500m runner but not in 5k. In fact he holds the record of having the longest career over 1500m right at the very top

FACT 1 - Lagat has been through the US collegiate system and has been here a number of years.
FACT 2 - The only thing that Lagat's citizenship proves is that he is AMERICAN. period. Lagat loves running for the US and wouldnt have it any other way.
FACT 3 - Hes not a top kenyan? where did you dig this up from? i seem to have a poster hanging in my room that is of him winning the 1500 at 07 worlds.. oh yeah, AND he won the 5k at the same meet. just because he didnt do well in 08 doesnt mean hes no longer a top kenyan. because he is.

honestly, Lagat won't get this and Rupp will, perhaps this summer if he hits a couple euro 5k's but next summer, look out:
