Does Rupp rank behind only the great Henry Rono as all-time collegiate distance runners?

David Kimani won 6 NCAA titles and had PRs of 1:49, 3:38 (3:52 relay split), and 13:10 to go with an XC title.

No RUPP doesn't. No runner in 4 years, let alone 2.5 years, of NCAA Div. I cross country and track and field running has won more NCAA individual championships than the great SALLY KIPYEGO. She won 9 titles in 2.5 years. No other runner is even close to approaching this level of dominance. Suzy Favor-Hamilton won her 9 in 4 years. The two ladies are tied for the most. If you're going for ratios, Rupp, if everything goes well at Outdoors, will likely come away with 5 NCAA titles this year. That would beat Kipyego in terms of #/year, albiet for fewer years. Imagine if he hadn't red shirted last year though? It could just as easily be close to 9 titles in the span of less than two years. But that's purely speculation.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention Cragg and Kimani. I think Cragg won like 7 NCAA titles, and Kimani 6. Lindgren had 11 NCAA titles, but I think back then you were only allowed 3 years of comp. Is that right? Or am I imagining things? Add another year, and that number should be at like 15.

Rono, Lindgren, Nyambi, Pre. in that order. I wouldn't even put Rupp in the top 10. 3 NCAA titles so far, and this is his senior year.

What might be a more intriguing title for this thread is who had the best senior season? Rupp's senior year ranks up there so far. His NCAA career? Lots of people have won a lot more titles throughout their 4 or 5 years...

Imagine if he hadn't turned pro once already.

I think Rupps senior year does launch him into that upper tier. He dominated Luke and Chris and Shadrack at Pac-10 & Regionals in cross country (roughly by a minute each) and these are 13:30/28:20 runners. His 3K and 5K races against Daba (won Carlsbad 5K this spring) were pretty nuts. His indoor NCAA's was absolute dominance. Out kicking 3:56 milers on the relay shortly after a 5K final, then shutting down to a 7:48 solo effort. He easily would have PR's in that race and may have cracked 7:40 if he redlined to the end.

In terms of PRs, a lot of the greats that have been mentioned had their share of European races during the summer to come up with their PR's. If Rupp went 3k, 5k & 10k in europe this summer I think only Rono would be in the discussion.

He hasn't won enough titles in the seasons that he's exercised eligibility. He's 2nd tier among all-time greats, at best. Right around the level of Teg, Ritz, Rohatinsky, Torres. His final year has been great, but his legacy in college has been the past 4-5 years. He's been a contender ever since he set foot on the track at Oregon and it's taken him 3+ years to figure out how to win against his competition in the NCAA, he has not been a consistent winner through his entire college career.

Yes, I did pretty much guarantee the Rockets would upset Lakers. They lose their best player and STILL took them to 7 games. If Cleveland lost Le Bron next game, would someone have been an idiot for insisting they would beat the Magic and then they lose to them in 7?

It seems maybe this discussion was based on PRs? Clearly Rupp doesn't stack up in terms of championships. Most of the folks mentioned, though, I'd love to see in a 10k-- I think Rupp has a shot there.

Teg won no titles and the others there only won 1 apiece. Rupp has 3 and better PRs than these guys when they were in college.
