Monte I think you're pretty close to spot on. However I think the smoke monster isn't actually Jacob's brother. I think the smoke monster just protects whoever is in charge of the island, when Jacob "died" the brother became in full command of the island. The smoke monster didn't show up until they began trying to attack Locke/the brother/Esau. Also when Locke/Esau left the shadow of the foot Richard frantically yelled dont shoot because he knew if they did the smoke monster would have to defend Locke/the man in black and would most likely kill everyone. Also I think it's pretty obvious that Sayid is now Jacob just as Locke was the man in black. So Sayid might have to actually convince someone following Locke/the man in black/the brother/Esau/whatever you want to call him to betray and kill him. Either that or the rules are simply that Jacob and the man in black cant kill each other so they have to find other people to do it. Also when they flashed back to one of the original people coming to the island the man in black said something along the lines of...they come they corrupt they kill it always ends the same. To which Jacob replies that everything before the killing in the end is progress. I think this makes the island seem like a test for people who come upon it and gives merit to the theory that they might be in some kind of purgatory. I think that idea is losing steam though. Anyway my 2 cents.

My wife thought that too about the smoke monster (that it protects whoever is in charge), but why then did Locke (the brother, Esau, etc) tell Ben "I'm sorry you had to see me like that" after the smoke monster came and crushed Jacobs followers? Esau/Locke seems to be the smoke monster.

Monte and the other dudes explanation were pretty solid and the island stuff from the premier was really good and interesting.

But was I the only one pissed off about the alternate reality? Just seemed to much of a stretch, especially considering how all of season 5 was dedicated to establishing the rules of time and how you can't change it, whats done is done (jacks a d bag for missing that boat)

I agree it seems like Locke or whoever is the smoke monster, but that doesn't really make sense. Why would he just chill on the island as a smoke monster and do ben/jacobs bidding.

This seems pretty legit. So here is the line of thinking;

Initial Plane Crash:

Christian in coffin, Destruction inhabits his body

Second Plane Crash:

Locke in coffin, Destruction ditches Christian's body in favor for Locke's because he knows Ben will follow Locke to destroy Jacob, but will not follow Christian to destroy Jacob

3rd Plan Non-Crash (Lands in LA):

Christian's body goes missing, and now Jacob will inhabit.

This last point is where the 2 alternate worlds collide, which up through last night, they have not. I have no idea how they are going to reconcile the alternate universe idea.

Also, how does Juliet know it worked? So many unanswered questions.

This is how I feel too, they can't kill each other, but obviously want too. However killing implies more than just taking care/killing of the body, something more needs to be done to fulfill this. It seems that whomever is left will get off the island/be free from it ('go home' can mean so many things). Purgatory seems appropriate.

Two of the producers on LOST were on the Jimmy Kimmel show last night, and they said that Locke is the smoke monster.

Lost fans are so annoying.

I thought it was pretty obvious that Locke/guy in black was the smoke monster. Did you guys miss that part? It also seemed that before he turned into the smoke monster a bullet actually repelled off his skin, which means not just anybody could shoot and kill him on spot. Killing him is more complicated than that and only Jacob/Sayid are somehow capable of this. I just thought off this but maybe the guy in black is already dead!! how can a living person take anothers body. Maybe it is only now that Jacob is dead that he may take Sayids body. Of course I'm only speculating.

I think there's quantum physics/mechanics involved which I think basically shows evidence at the atomic level that the same thing can exist in two simultaneous places. I think that's related to how they can be, at the same time, on the island and on the plane/in America.

My dates might be wrong, I'm not 100% on the dates...

1. You're in 1974. You blow up what caused the plane crash. Fast forward to 2004 and the plane doesn't crash.

2. But you're still stuck in 1974. Why? That means somehow the people who didn't crash still somehow got to the island.

3. All of these unrelated people on the plane still find themselves interacting with each other. Why?

4. Maybe what we're seeing with the plane landing in LA has nothing to do with them setting off the bomb in 1974?

5. If Juliet did make everything go boom why is everyone still there?

Sounds pretty good, Monte.

To me, the island is a sort of purgatory, and death is the only way out. (Juliet says "it worked.") Death is not a bad thing on the island, necessarily. It is about the struggles of mortality: "life's a bitch, then you die" could be a good way to describe it, because they are trying very hard to survive, and the whole time, death was the only way out.

Also, Miles is the only one who can transcend purgatory. Something tells me he saw the alternate LAX scene through Juliet.

I would guess that everyone dies in the end somehow, but not in the usual sense. It's more like they will all reach a sort of nirvana by understanding their mortality.

Just my take on the overall theme of this season, based entirely off of the first episode. Could be completely wrong, but hey, that's what's fun about this show.

Not a bad take, but here is a flaw. We know for a fact that you don't have to die to get off the island. People come and go all the time and they are very much alive.

How many episodes make up this season?

I don't think they will all die, that would leave viewers very displeased. Maybe their island selves will die but I think most of the cast will somehow survive in the real world away from the island. Then again Kate is on the chase in LA once again and Locke can't walk, I doubt it will be left at that. But smashing that bomb thing def did work otherwise how would we see Boone and Locke alive. And Jack is acting very strange on that plane as if he is expecting something. He and Locke are the last two to get off. Locke partially b/c of his handicap, but they both have this expression of "That's it?" I guess we'll have to wait and see, but the fact that they lost Jack's father corpse is a big clue that something big is happening. Jacob stole it.
