Unload your Title IX frustration here

If you want the REAL answer you have to start thinking off the reservation, you have to realize that sports and universities have no business being in cahoots with each other.

The real answer is to have NO athletic scholarships for any sport. All "school sports" would be clubs and receive no revenue from the school or tie to the school unless that club chose to set itself up that way. That includes fball and b'ball- that would mean no longer having to act like these guys are "student athletes" and they can go on a be what they are- minor league pro sports.

The woman, well.. good luck. Since the clubs would be not be part of the school/ government then there is no "right to track and field" so they'd have to find funding for a women's XC club just like the men. All of us non reveue sports would be in the same boat, and it'd be hard to find cash- but they'd be relieved of Title IX and the NCAA.

Here is some historical data on NCAA participation in all sports:

1981-2: Men: 167,055; Women: 64,390

1991-2: Men: 183,672; Women: 92,472

2001-2: Men: 214,186; Women: 158,469

This illustrates that overall implementation of Title IX has been rather effective. Participation levels have risen for both Men and Women (contrary to popular opinion) to the tune of nearly 33% for men and 150% for women.

Quite simply, quit whining and transfer if your program is cut. There are hundreds of programs to transfer to. If you cannot earn a grant-in-aid at the new institution, then you better run faster. Simple.

If you think Track and Field is bearing the brunt of this, ask a Men's Valleyball or Waterpolo player.

So quit bitching, go train, and run faster. Things will take care of themselves if you do.

No truly deserving athlete will not get a scholarship, if that's what he wants. We're probably hearing most of the bitching on this subject from 7th men on teams at Backwater Tech College.

You're dismissing the complaint too easily. It's not that simple. When there are fully funded women's teams, some that have to offer scholarships to girls that just are NOT very good. Then on the men's side you have half the scholarship dollars, there is a real problem.

Sure this isn't a problem at the big programs, but is that what we want for our men's XC and Track, to only have scholarship money for top footlocker finalists at a handful of schools? That doesn't make for a healthy sport at all.

You continue to pit men vs. women but the real issue isn't that some non-competitive woman took your scholarship. Your scholarship is being taken by a third string-long snapper who is never going to get off the bench.

True, there's no women's equivalent to football. Its a men's only sport that requires an army of personnel, so of course the stats are skewed.

That being said, I ran at a school that didn't have f'ball and still had a fully funded women's program and half that number of men's scholarships, also we had no men's track team, just XC.

fball should be taken off the table due to it's unique nature in the collegiate sporting world. They have a different reveue model than the rest of us, they have different numbers, different coaching pay scale- it's an animal unto it'self.

I don't want women's teams cut either, but I hate to see men's vollyball, wrestling, track, XC, swimming, diving, all cut just because it's not f'ball.

Football is apparently this "giant white elephant" in the room that gets blamed for everything on the men's side for Title IX. However, this whole discussion was brought up because Quinnipiac lost its track teams. Quinnipiac doesn't even have football. Imagine if they did? With that ratio of male to female athletes they'd have to cut every men's sport but football and basketball.

So while, yeah, in some cases, football can be blamed, it is not the issue here. Title IX, while it's intentions are great and have done wonders for women's athletics, has outlived its usefulness.

Of course it is, you're just ignorant! No athlete who doesn't draw income to that athletic department "deserves" their scholarship. It's charity, and for public (government-supported) institutions the government gets to say how that charity will be distributed. Why many of us complain about track and field being cut –

1. Track & Field is the oldest sport known to mankind.

2. It is the most popular sport in the World as there are

more countries participating in track and field in the

Olympics than any other Olympic sport.

3. Track and Field has one of the largest number of

minorities participating making it one of the most

diverse athletic programs a school can sponsor.

4. According to the National Federation of State High

School Associations, Boy's Track and Field has the

second most schools offering the sport with 15,497

high schools sponsoring a team. It ranks third in

participation with 533,985 student- athletes.

***So I think if you consider the above Track and Field SHOULD NOT be cut at any school.

But then again… Until distance runners unite and speak out and get donors to hold back money to universities, write letter to universities presidents and trustees, get the public involved and make race an issue (as track and field is one of the most diverse programs) this will happen again and again...

the problem with the system is the fact that if a male high school athlete, even if they are one of the 10 best runners in the nation, decides they want to go to a powerhouse program often times they only get a 50% scholarship leaving the cost of the school to be more than most others pay to go to the same school from in state.

I got the privilege of being discriminated against in college and now get the privilege of having the beneficiaries of this discrimination (or people who never faced it) describe to me on letsrun how good Title IX is for America.

Title IX has its advantages don't get me wrong, but I went to a school were all the volleyball and women's basketball players were on full rides. They have won one conference game in two years, but the mens track team can barely leave the state because of a low budget. Most of the men's team is on in-state tuition waver while girls that run 2:40 800s and 6 minute 1500s are getting pretty good scholarships. It just frustrates me sometimes.

Threads like these make me glad I went DIII.
