I agree with fed-ex. And how did you come up with the idea that Kenny B had less in the tank than Sihine (not likely conclusion). And if he's only gotta outkick 1 guy then it still comes down to a matter of strength+fitness (if you're looking for a race that comes down to speed watch Lagat outkick everyone in the WC 2007 5km that is speed).

Rupp did run a 10k last weekend in Eugene. I wouldn't race anything more than a 1500 this weekend anyways. You can't stack up several 10ks in a track season, and he's likely to run it at PAC 10s before NC's

I can't remeber whether it was '04 Olympics, '05 WC, or '07 WC, but the leaders closed that last 5K and sub 13. This is why Rupp won't be around with 2 laps to go. If he is then Bekele and crew are snoozing and will prolly drop a 49 last quarter. Rupp has no chance unless he improves a lot in every aspect of running. I hope he does and if running this 800 tonight helps him get there then great.

Clearly more tired? Sihine was clearly more tired because Bekele easily outsprinted him. Bekele was just biding his time.

Rupp wants to run in the slow 800 heat so he can come in 1st place as he pumps his fists and the crowd cheers him on, end of story...

You probably meant acknowledgment and fair enough. Meb is the 10K record holder and does have a silver medal in the marathon and nobody can take those achievements away. I fully respect what meb has accomplished. I just think Rupp is at a level of fitness now that Meb never got to on the track at 5K or 10K, or for that matter in cross country and I know Meb has placed at least as high as 26th in the senior x-c world champs (when they split the races into short and long). And before someone says "uhh what there PR's?" Obviously Meb's are still better. But an experienced eye can spot talent and ability and when you have a handful of reference points for fitness and racing ability it's not that hard to come up with a hypothesis.

It was not meant to be a knock on Meb, more of a compliment to Rupp.

i've said it before and i'll say it again, i'm all for all of our runners and obviously i'm a big fan our whoever is at the top, and especially when they begin to get competitive for world class times and international medals. i think hall is that in the marathon, and i think right now galen is that in the 10K. fernandez may be there soon if his progression keeps going.

these are the young breed and it's exciting to see them come up, and they don't have ceilings yet so i don't know why people are trying to put ceilings on them.

Rupp already closed in 1:55 at the indoor NCAA 5000, running by himself, with another race to run shortly after. It's clear that he's well on his way to being able to do this in a 10K. He's getting better in about every other race he runs. What more could you ask for?

Bekele put over 3 seconds on Sihine in like the last 150 alone. Are you seriously saying that this is all due to better speed? Do you really think that Bekele can run a 150 over 3 seconds faster than Sihine? Don't you think it makes more sense that Bekele had more left in the tank because he's a 26:17 10k runner and Sihine's pr is only in the 26:30s? And how exactly do you judge who's more tired? Haven't you ever felt like you had nothing left in a race, and then all of a sudden feel like you get a second wind at the end?

Meb has finished 11, 13, 14, and 26th at World Cross Cross Country Championships in the long (12k) race in the early part of this decade (2000-2003). Galen Rupp is an accomplished young runner but I disagree with the notion that he is a superior cross country runner to Meb unless maybe the course is Rupp-certified.

Silver Medalist in the MARATHON... respect should be earned, not given for charity events

Rupp is on course to be a force in international 10K races, but not just yet. Unlike most American athletes, his coaches understand how to develop a talent to his maximum potential. That just doesn't happen overnight and there shouldn't be any doubters that Rupp's career has been handled very well. I can recall ignorant people disparaging Rupp's racing, but his coaches stayed the course. Another thing...Lananna has made a point of not over-racing his athletes because he uses the fact that he works with his top athletes to prepare them for international competition as a recruiting tool (e.g. Rupp, Klotz, Kozinski, Blood).

Going back to Rupp's schedule. At this point it appears that his schedule will soon be in high gear: he will run 800 meters this weekend, then one leg of the 4 X mile on the 9th. Then he will probably run 10K at the Pac 10's, 5K at the Regionals, 5K and 10K at NCAA's. Those are his tune-ups, because then he will go pro and race the USATF championships as his first pro-race before heading for Europe. In my opinion, he has a fantastic future and will be a world contender within three years. Also, in my opinion, I wish that coaches of young athletes such as German Fernandez would take notice to how Galen Rupp has been developed. They just might avoid the risk of ruining great potential talents if they would follow his blueprint.

Rupp certainly proved to be the better college XC runner. As far as World XC, Rupp has a whole pro career to beat those mediocre placings.
