Duel in The Sun.
The fact that neither Beardsley or Salazar was ever able to return to that level again speaks legions.
They both put it all on the line that day.

London 2002 is the greatest ever. More than 10 contenders fighting for the win including KK, Tergat, and Geb the best marathoners back then. London 2008 is second but 2002 is far more exciting.
Beijing Olympics was faster, hotter, and the pace went out more suicidal than duel in the sun.
Hahaha. Voting for London 2002.

No way any London mary can be considered. Arbitrarily fast (short?) course, rabbits, etc. It's not a race. No one really considers London to be racing. Big bucks = top talent, but not good racing.
Are you dumb? You think that there is any chance that the London marathon course is short? True, it has rabbits usually, but Paula went 2.17 there in 2005 and she pretty much blasted away from the rabbits by the 5km mark. It is known as a fast course, but it is not generally thought of as being as fast as Rotterdam or Berlin - I'd say it is equivalent to Chicago. And it has had some fine old races over the years, in recent years when Lel has won convincingly it has been because he is just that good - racing away from the awesome competition. Geb has got the world record and the fast times but only in Dubai and Berlin: whenever he's come to London he's been destroyed. That's what I call racing!
CWG '82 Brisbane

Yeah, it could be epic. 1am Pacific time start, right? Late night coming! :)
Abebe Bikila, running barefoot through the streets of Rome, to become the first black African to win Olympic Gold. Look what he started !
Second that!
Since the original post was best marathon RACE, I'll work with that.
Hands down, Dual in the Sun, 1982 Boston.
And then Bikila continued what he started by decimating a great field while running an extremely relaxed world best marathon in Tokyo four years later for a second Olympic Gold Medal!
I 2nd Dixon
Wow, did Bikila ever race in 64!. He won by nearly 3 minutes leaving Heatley, Tsuburaya, Kilby, Suto, Edelen, Vandendriessche, Kimihara, Clarke, Wolde, Lee, Oksanen, Mills and Terasawa far behind. In that field were three runners that had run world best marathons between 1960 and 1964 plus three other runners who had six Boston Marathon wins among them.
Sorry. Abebe Bikila won by 4 minutes and 8 seconds over that very strong field.

Not dumb. Are you coked up?
Paula and other elite women are paced by men. WTF? How can anyone consider that racing? It's a glorified time trial. No serious student of the sport outside of GB considers London to be a serious RACE. Sorry.

I notice that you're no longer questioning whether or not London marathon is short or not. It was that comment that made me think you might be dumb.
The women's race at London has had male pace-makers a couple of times only, firstly in 2003 when Paula did 2:15 and secondly in 2006 when Deena did 2:19. Paula actually wanted to run in the men's race in 2003 - it's a shame they didn't let her. No woman would have been able to pace her further than 10km in 2003 to be honest - she did the third mile in less than 5 minutes. I agree that the 2006 race was a bit disappointing, especially because the guy who paced Deena was her training partner. But 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008 have had great women's races, although not always close. The pacemakers in those races have not had much impact.
The men's race at London does often get pulled along by rabbits for a while, but of course, lots of "students of the sport" do consider it to be a great race - there have been very tight finishes and world records - how many of the greatest marathon runners of our time have not tried to race at London?
