Dave Smith does know what hes doing. Anyone remember that interview a while back when he talked about German focusing more on the mile/1500 for a while? If that is in fact the plan, an 800 sounds pretty good to me. For that matter, even if he were focusing on the 5,000 an 800 meter speed tester is never a bad thing. gotta have that kick to win the big ones.

yea, having him focus on the mile for a year is an awful idea, you were right. What is he possibly going to get out of that? Its not like working on some shorter stuff, perhaps with shorter mileage is going to be a little easier on an injury prone runner. I mean come on. What 5,000 meter runner ever spent some time focusing on the mile? Its like his coach thinks German wants to have a long term career and is trying to prepare him for something bigger than the 2009 NCAAs or something.

Well why do we keep referring to him as a '5000m' runner? When did he become that? If I'm not mistaken, he just set (or tied) the NCAA indoor mile record...Now let me list some 1500m Olympians who couldn't beat that time in NCAAs...

Speaking of Sully, he's someone who has spoken out against the assumption that runners always need to consider moving up as they age. While he's run some good 5,000s, he said in an interview I read not too long ago that he's always thought of himself as a miler and always thought he'd end his career as a miler. And he was a pretty damn fine cross-country runner, despite being a miler. I agree with those who say we don't know yet at what distance German might excel. I do think he's racing too early, but that's just my bias against the US system.
