Differences between North and South

I live in the North and I don't anyone who calls it "pop." Closest friend, geographically, I had who called it pop lived in West Virginia.

The South is a severe impediment to any meaningful progress.

Believe me, every native Southerner knows that term is used in derision down here. Why are we the hypocrites when we don't like Yankees but you can bash the South? You don't want us to be fake, fine. There it is. We don't like Yankees. Is that better? Is that the honesty you were looking for?

In the south it's called a soft drink. And people in the south are nicer.

You weren't even alive the last time the Klan was prominent in the South or when blacks were getting hung.

You just generalized the south in 2009 with events that happened over 30 years ago.

No one gives a F*** about your geographic based feelings of superiority. Humans are humans everywhere. Part of what I like about America so much is the huge cultural diversity, and that is it all so easily accessible, so much that one can drive from coast to coast without ever being stopped. The fact is that if you haven't walked down Times Square, tailgated at a Georgia football game, checked out the fine females at the Cali beaches, and watched a track meet at Hayward, then you have not experienced even one percent of what this country has to offer. There is so much far and between those that it would take a lifetime to experience; none the less, I urge you to get out of your mom's basement and see the world.

1/3 of differences are about soda versus pop or so it seems.

A: The ability to read.

Pop = rural

Soda = urban

east west north south if someone lives in the sticks they say pop. If they live in or near a city they say soda.

These generalities/stereotypes make me laugh. It's not possible to lump people like this anymore. I've ran into "rednecks" in New York. What about all the "Yankee" transplant snowbirds in Florida, Texas, and Arizona? Ever heard of the "Hillbilly Highways"? Hill folk from Tennessee, Kentucky, northern Georgia, etc., heading north to places like Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburgh to work in the factories.

What about the large urban black migration from the deep South to the upper Midwest and the Northeast in the 1920s? You guys speak as if it were 1870.

There are large Asian populations in places like Denver, Minneapolis, Carthage and Springfield, MO (really!).

St. Louis has one of the largest Jewish populations in the U.S.

San Diego and Detroit have the largest Arab populations outside of the Near East.

My point is, one person is overtly nice at a rest stop in Marietta, GA, and all of the sudden, by god, every person in GA acts that way. Nevermind the thirty people with almost zero accent that absolutely ignored you (who are local).They walked right by you in the parking lot.

Or what about the nice guy you ran into at a pub in Boston or Duluth who showed you the town while you were there. "What a nice guy!" A coincidence, I suppose. People aren't friendly north of the Mason-Dixon line.

Give me a break.

I lived in southwest Missouri, which is WAY more populated than central MO and they called it pop with a twang that sounded like a Dwight Yoakum song, and in central/northern MO, they call it soda. These areas are much more rural.

St. Louis: soda

KC: either/or.

Both have the same latitude, roughly.

Mississippi: pop

Texas: soda or pop

So it's just my imagination that people, generally speaking, behaved differently in the redneck Klan-infested Midwestern farm town where I was raised than here in New York? Yeah, you're probably right.

Still, my imagination is remarkably consistent, and it consistently tells me there's a huge difference in this directness vs. politeness thing in the urban Northeast vs. the South and Midwest. And to me, that obligatory smile and greeting and happiness registers as fake, and grates. To others, New Yorkers register as rude assholes. To each his own.

Well, we all can argue the North vs. South differences all day, but it is best that it stays on this board. As for me, I will continue to enjoy the South, where I don't have to be open-minded. Some people don't want to embrace social change, and that's fine. The South is a place where you can happily live with such an attitude. Similarly, if you have a liberal attitude, the North is a great place for you.

My problem comes when someone takes it upon themselves to move to either region with an attitude that their views are the superior ones, and that it is their job to change all those around them. So you don't like the South? Good. Don't move here. We will continue to enjoy the good weather (some of us like humidity), the extremely hot women, and the cuisine. I will enjoy rolling around in my truck and partying in barns, because it's cheaper and a lot more fun than buying $6 beers in a New York bar while surrounded by people that think they are superior to everyone else.

In fact, I think instead of worrying about immigration, we should focus on stopping migration to the South from Northern states. Granted, this would violate the privileges and immunities clause, but most of the present administration (on both sides of the political spectrum) doesn't care about the Constitution, anyway, so no worries.

After watching one episode of MTVs "The City" I now believe that New Yorkers are for the most part...self righteous a$$holes.

New Yorkers are very nice. I kid you not. The assholes you see in NYC are from New Jersey. We try and keep out, but they keep coming across bridges and through tunnels and stuff.
