Fair enough, but why would any elite distance runner wear them to race in if they give no advantage?Did Paula Radcliffe explain why she wore them, has Solinsky(great time)ever said why?He was not the only one wearing them, looked like a team mate also did so.I presume that they were medical type version?
I agree about the non-medical socks, they feel nice but no
physiological advantage in my personal use experience
Studies have shown they improve recovery significantly. As far as performance enhancement is concerned nothing has been statistically found (except a single German study that seemed to use non-graded compression socks and found a significant improvement). However, based on anecdotal evidence they sound like a good idea (Solinsky AR, Bairu CR, Radcliffe WR, Flanagan AR).
The medical socks are great - it's all about graduated compression. Most of the compression socks by the sports companies are tighter at the top, which acts like a tourniquet. Quattro Fitness and Sigvaris are two that are manufactured by medical companies for sportswear. They have graduated compression.

They are a waste of money. Get yourself a good pair of Gel-Nimbus and head out to the concrete.
You are / were, the biggest d-bag ever on this site.
Run on "Flat Dirt" ever chance you get.
Compression socks (medical) are meant to prevent blood pooling in the legs which can generate clots and deep vein thrombosis etc. For a runner, it "could" do the same thing essentially counteracting gravity and centrifugal force and increasing blood return. I can imagine this "might" have the slight benefit of increasing the rate of blood return to the heart (and lungs) and decreasing the mass of your lower legs (less blood).
Great point - I have seen that the Nike and Under Armour socks are just tight socks. They do not have the gradient compression that comes with medical grade compression socks. Any quality compression sock will indicate the compression level of the sock (12-20mmHg, 20-30mmHg, 30-40mmHg, etc). If they can't provide the gradient, then they are not true gradient compression socks.
I could be mistaken, but I've never actually seen our socks for sale in the US. saw them in the UK for sale but pretty sure they never made the market here.
I'd wager that you have soccer socks that are snug fitting, but the ones I received aren't legal b/c the mmhg is too high to be approved by FDA, so they only made them for contract athletes in very small runs. ones I have are significantly tighter than the CEP, and prob more than double as tight as oxysox. Darn near impossible for me to even get them over my heel but I certainly swear by em, esp for plane rides and long drives. seem to make a little diff in longer races too, but I don't like socks so....try ebay or a european store, you might actually find the actual compression sox, but otherwise I think what you'll find in the US is not what you see OR crew, paula, moi wearing. best of luck.
