Men who take their wife's maiden name as their last name...

I said "could not" so that means I'm married. I was never going to be a spinster. For some reason men have always been into me. ;)

A fellow associate at my firm who "married up" told me his wife's (wealthy) family made a strong push for him to take her name (I think it was the "no sons" circumstance) but he couldn't do it. He did make it sound as though the presssure (and possible monetary enticement) came from the family not his bride.

I basically had to take my wife's last name, not right when we were married but when I switched my citizenship to her country's and there is no way to write my last name with the writing/name system, so in choosing a last name of course I picked my wife's. Does that make me a pussy?

I married into a foreign family they ALL have different surnames.

The Mayor of Los Angeles combined his paternal name, Villa, with his wife's Raigosa, to make Antonio Villaraigosa. Last I heard he was a baddie gangbanger who reformed, got his stuff together, became an effective state speaker then mayor of America's 2nd largest city and the first Latino mayor in the City of Angels since the 1860s. He has since divorced and keeps the name, which is a bit complicated, but look at Italians and the Irish, and the Kenyans, they don't really buy into the Anglo name-making macho BS.

A child being given a last name of the paternal + maternal name is NOT the same as the man changing his last name to his brides last name.

Names and history are such an antiquated concept.

Who cares. My wife didn't take my name and our kids (girls and boys) have hers.

I don't treat my wife like my property and I don't want society to continue to treat my daughters like second class citizens - so I "gave up" my name to make the point that 1. names are meaningless, 2. to shake things up and try to help get us out of the male dominated society we live in.

I am a hockey watching, beer drinking, ex-varsity runner. I like girl watching and contact sports, but I am also sensitive to the fact that our society still does not see women (our wives, daughters, sisters, friends, and moms) as equals.

Truthfully, how many of you wouldn't consider taking your wife's name if you were marrying Katherine or Christina Schwarzenegger?

My wife did not take my last name. I did not take hers; but I wouldn't feel emasculated if I did. What a stupid concept--that somehow your manhood or lack of manhood is tied up in a name...

Moreso at borders and airplanes. Divorced and remarried parents have dealt with this, so it isn't a huge problem, but I generally carry copies of their birth certficates (that show the mother's name) and our marriage licence, when i travel alone with them.

A dad travelling without the mom is viewed in some cases with suspicion anyway, so I am not sure I wouldn't travel with a bunch of documents anyway.

The only one of these situations that are legitimate are where the guy had a bad relationship with his family and feels close to his wife's family. I can respect that.

Otherwise I don't care how "progressive" or whatever word you're substituting for yuppie these days you are, it's silly.
