Why Bauhs is better than Rupp...

Nothing close to 100 mile weeks in HS. I have old training logs around somewhere. I'm pretty sure he touched 70 or 80 getting ready for cross before his senior year, but not that often. He would be at 50 or 60 his senior year, maybe a couple double days, long runs of 13 or so. When we had hard workouts he ran hard, but he raced much better than he trained. The quality day in and day out training didn't occur until he got to Chico. At SRV we tried to maintain a moderate level of miles and intensity. Hunter (the real brains behind the operation) and I dealt with a wide range of kids (50-60 during cross) and made sure the training program was suitable for everyone without burning anyone out.

I don't think Scott even touched 100 until his second year of college, but I could be off on that. Even now I don't think he is that far over 100. But from what I understand he is very consistent. That was true during HS. I can't remember any serious injury and very little time off. Just consistent training.

Just wondering, but the 100 mile week number I think comes from an article in the Oregonian a while back that mentioned that number. However it went on to explain that something around a third of that number was on an underwater treadmill. Am I remembering this accurately? And do those still count as 100 mile weeks if it was done in the pool? Because to me, running in the pool is more of cross training than actual running...

Again, I am going off memory, and not totally sure about this.

Just to put Rupp's 5k PR in perspective, the second 5k of his 10k was 13:37 I believe. He also placed 11th in the 10k at the World Championships. He clearly has more upside than Bauhs, and has the talent to become one of America's best distance runners ever. Bauhs has really come into his own recently, and his progress is quite impressive. It remains to be seen how he will do on the national scene and at the olympic trials.

I don't see how someone can say Rupp "clearly" has more upside when Bauhs is coming from way back to nearly match Rupp's PRs. 10th in the world is misleading with only 3 entries per country. He's a great runner and best of luck to him, but if you think he's in the top 15 10K guys in the world, you're crazy.

I would submit that Rupp and Bauhs are two different runners from two very different backgrounds. Both have accomplished a great deal in their young careers and I hope they continue to improve and accomplish more. A few thoughts though:

1- Neither are in the top 25 in the world in any event. Have Galen submit his 10k time to the gentlemen who select the Kenyan or Ethiopian national teams. They would laugh. Geb was told he was too slow to RUN in the Olympics in the 10k by his country.

2- Figuring out who has a better upside is rather silly considering few if any of us know the details of their training programs. (Don't tell me you read an article or saw a video on flocasts). I see Josh McDougal training 3 to 4 times a week and I only have a general idea of what he does.

3- Personally I find Bauhs more interesting than Rupp for a few simple reasons. For the past couple of years Rupp has had every advantage a runner could possibly have. (altitude tents, Alberto Salazar, Nike, underwater treadmills, European time trials, etc.) Bauhs has not had these advantages. If you don't think they are advantages I recommend you read what the Gouchers have said since they moved from Colorado. If this means that Bauhs has more upside, I have no idea, but he sure is interesing.

I am a fan of any American who runs fast and trying to compete on the international level. If Rupp needs Nike to improve then good for them. If Bauhs has everything he needs at Chico then good for him also. I guess we will figure out who is better at Trials. Nothing like a race to settle the questions.

I wouldn't say Bauhs is better than Rupp just yet. Both have tremendous talent. Rupp has had every possible advantage a young runner could dream of, Bauhs not so much. Rupp has been successful at this for quite a few years, Bauhs is just getting started.

I do think I'd pick Bauhs over Rupp at any distance. Rupp just hasn't demonstrated the instinct and/or the maturity to win.

BTW, aren't these two about the same age?

To some of you guys Rupp will always be the "poor little kid" , it's always been a lame excuse. Lets hope Bauhs doesn't develop a fanboy cult following like Rupp.

I'd like to keep a little perspective, all young runners need and deserve the running communities support, including Bauhs and Rupp.

i think that's where it gets lost in translation. yes he works hard, as does Bauhs. What everybody is saying, though, is that Bauhs hasn't had as much stuff (coaching, technology, etc.) to work with. It's as simple as that.

Everybody who is pro-Rupp always argues that "Rupp haters" say he doesn't work hard. Nobody says that. We say he's had more advantages. That is undeniable.

Please quote the entire statement, there's no criticism of Bauhs' coaching at all. I believe that they're saying that while Rupp is well known for taking advantage of the little things that may make a big difference at the limits of human performance, Bauhs has used very little of these things.

One thing that Rupp has had that Baughs has not, is an extreme amount of pressure for a long time now. It might be a little easier to run his best if he were not under such scrutiny at all times.

I'm very impressed by both, but it seems to me that Rupp has plateaus that are usually hand in hand with how much pressure he's feeling. When he is able to relax and look at things differently he has a nice breakthrough. I think his most recent is the constant mile running. He actually had one or two good races in there, but the pressure of not breaking 4 had to be mounting. If he clears his head I bet he'll have another surge forward. Imagine running that fast that young, and then everyone saying he has no reason not to because he has every advantage on earth. It's hard to live up to that season after season.

I still think his amazing race (which happened to end in 27:33) last spring and his performance at NCAA cross, off of a partial season and against a very formidable foe indicate a lot of potential.

As does Scotty with all he's done training out in Chico.

Obviously he's got good coaching now at Chico, but I agree with listing it as something Rupp has a leg up on him at, as far as I know Bauhs didn' have a former world record holder coaching him as a high schooler.
