What's better than NTN? - Let me tell ya....

Nike Team Nationals is fine and all, but what I would find much more captivating would be some sort of national meet with teams made up of the best runners from each state. Say, 7 runners per state. That'd be 350 runners total, which is too big for one race. There may need to be a regional system that narrows it down to the top 20-25 states for the national meet. The difficulty would come in selecting the runners. It could be based on finish in the state meet, but with some states having many divisions, you would want the best 7 runners, regardless of division, which would make selection tricky. When selecting teams for the Washington-Oregon Borderclash, I think they choose runners from all division, but the bigger the division the deeper they go into the state results (i.e., 4A gets like 12 runners or something, whereas 1A only gets 1 or 2). However, given that there are only 7 slots, this system may be less effective. Any ideas for how they might select runners? Coaches polls? Some kind of point system? It being XC, you probably wouldn't want to go off of times. Who else would find this 'XC Battle of the States', if you will, more interesting than NTN?

1. I don't like the OP's idea. NTN is highly successful and is not going away. The idea of bringing together the top high school teams is awesome. Personally, a state vs. state competition isn't that exciting.

2. Nike gave Foot Locker every opportunity to jump on board with a national championship event for BOTH individuals and teams. Foot Locker has wanted to maintain it's individual focus, despite the writing on the wall. The idea that Nike is trying to push Foot Locker out is ridiculous. If so, why did they pick up Eastbay as a co-sponsor?

3. I'm not convinced that Adidas, Asics, Brooks, etc. will co-sponsor Foot Locker. Why didn't any of these shoe companies pick it up for this year? My guess is that they also see the writing on the wall -- NTN becoming THE national championship for individuals and teams.

NTN is just not so interesting (at least to me). Few really care about the best team in XC at this level because unlike colleges, if you are with HS X in a state do you care very much about what HS Y does? Not nearly as much as with colleges, which are competing against each other all year. The individual meet means a lot and has the history behind it.

I believe that the race began with Keebler (food/crackers) as the sponsor.

This is interesting because, I am not sure if many people know this, but Eastbay is owned by Footlocker. Interesting for them to support NTN when it is very obvious that Footlocker is getting killed by NTN.

Umm, I don\'t think you understood the point the poster you replied to was making. He was saying that there is no bad blood between Footlocker and Nike with his evidence being the fact that the Footlocker owned Eastbay is supporting NTN.

Killed? Wejo should check and see who is posting this and if they work for Nike. I and a lot of other peole could give a shit about who the best high school team is. Blue hen high school means nothing to me.
