Fernando Cabada is running the Olympic Trials

I am behind him. He is a good guy, and has talent. You can see that he has good form and potential. He has run 28:20 and 2:12, and those times will be improved in the future. He is more talented than Ryan Shay, and will improve.

Give the guy time, and he could surprise people. Fukuoka was a good indication of what he could do in the marathon.

He will not run the trials, but he will be ready for other surprises, once he gets a solid, injury free, 3 months of training under his belt.

Cabada talks, but he makes sense, and if his style of rhetoric does not please you, you are not forced to listen. Give the man the support he craves and he will do well. He relies on support to run well.

Gabe Jennings has persoanlity and when he was at his peak was good for the sport. This guy is anything but...

This kind of attitude is what is wrong with sports, this guy acts like TO, Randy Moss, Barry Bonds, etc. without making the millions. This attitude is what is wrong with sport today!

Anyone who talks that much crap should have made the trials a priority.

LDR types suck - we see them all the time - meek and humble Johny "All-American" Goodguy who always says the same things "I'm just glad to be here representing my country, trying to make the team, run a good race, etc" - makes me want to vomit.

Cabada is doing a great job of promoting himself - notice how, everyone is talking about him, everyone knows who he is.

There was a US guy in the not too distant past - very nice, very quiet, very humble - he was running sub 1330 and sub 28:00 - and he didn't have a sponsor.

Practically everyone knows who Cabada is around here - he's his own promo team - good or bad, you know who he is.

I like him (as a runner, get your minds out of the gutter), but I did not like some of what he said in that video. There's a line between confident and cocky. Cocky is telling people how great you are and confident is showing how great you are. So the only way to be as good as he knows he can be is to do it. Even if he won't place in the top three, the trials will give him more experience. How can he expect to be as good as these guys without racing them? It also bothers me that he seems to be putting down the majority of Olympic trials runners because he doesn't think they have a chance at making it. At least they are trying.

He's not putting down the others. He is saying that Meb and Abdi are a class above most of the others.

With standards as high as they are in the U.S. now, it would not make sense for Fernando to run the trials unless he was 100% in shape.

He has learnt from past mistakes, and will re-surface again.

Yes, he promotes himself, and it is a refreshing change from the monosyllabic runners who never say anthing of note. Cabada has a personality and would make a good salesman. Probably not genius IQ but he has enough smarts to make it as a sub 2:10 runner. The equipment and biomechanics are there.

He is good for the sport, and he needs more encouragement, because if people continue dissing him, we might not see him anymore.

I don't understand why people try to knock his intelligence. If you can't understand what he is saying in his videos, then maybe you are the idiot. He uses quite a bit of slang but who cares about being grammatically perfect? This isn't English class, this is the way that a great number of people talk every day.

It's good to see a runner that has some personality. Like him or not, it makes things interesting.

He left IU and has moved back to Fresno,but for the past few weeks has been training in Flagstaff.

He owns the American 25k record too. A lot of talent.

This might be part of the problem. Adults shouldn't crave support or attention. How about a little self-reliance. Leave the craving to the Lohans, Spears and Hiltons of the world.

Why are you guys ripping on this guy so much? He doesn't seem like a bad guy at all. He might not be a genius, but he doesn't deserve all the bashing he's getting.

That's been the problem with Americans over the last decade. They were happy to be the best American while being nothing in the World.

The best runners are selfish - ask their wives and kids... the kimbia guys go to 3-month training camps away from their families. Oprah would have a slaughter-fest with them.

My advice to Americans:

- Be selfish, do everything you can do in this sport to be the best you can be

- Believe that you are the best - don't be afraid of somebody (like the Africans) because they are different. They want you to be afraid, especially when you shouldn't be (see Cabada;s comments after breaking the US 25k record and winning the Grand Rapids race over world class Kenyans)

- Get yourself ready. Sorry txgirl, there is no sense in running the trials unless you can make the team (unless your goal is just to run for the experience.) This ain't middle school track.

He's got it right (and I think he gets this from Simmons), don't hope that you can squeeze by or hope that others will falter. Focus on you. Get strong and get tough and know that you can crush people even before you try.

You've seen it in Cabada. You've seen it in Hall. This is a new attitude and all you "run the trials for fun's sake" are lame...

But I'll give you a purple ribbon, anyway, just for trying and participating in the discussion. You're the best! (insert Special Olympic hug here....)

he does seem to have the right attitude about not settling for being a decent runner and skipping the trials for the right reason, but he also seems like a d-bag.

i think the best thing for Fernando right now is to get a significant other (whether is it a gf, bf, coach, mommy, daddy, shrink, whatever) who will just sit and listen to him and give him honest feedback.
