One Confirmed Death in Chicago Marathon

Global Warming happened in the 50s! Now we are experiencing Global Cooling! This year in Louisville, KY we've had 65 days in the 90s...but that's only 5th on the list. 4 years, all in the 1950s, had more days in the 90s. One year had 85 total days in the 90s!!! Normal for Louisville is 30 days in the 90s.

So, relative to the 1950s Louisville is having Global Cooling!! As always, everything has a context. The Earth has always had periods of hotter than normal and colder than normal weather. Are we making it warmer? Well...duh. Just our existance on this Earth warms it up as we give off heat just like every other living creature. You want to end Global Warming?...jump off a bridge..;)

As far as the heat death goes....

There are 3 major marathons in this country...Boston, NYC, Chicago. So you're going to have a lot of first time and/or untrained people entering those three races. The longer you are out there the more likely you're going to have problems. I cannot fathom being out there for 4, 5, or 6 hours. This is a perfect case of a race getting too big for it too handle. They ran out of water. Well if you have 40,000 people entered and it's near 90 degrees you're going to reach a breaking point in the water supply. It's sad news to hear about what happened today.

i ran boston 2004--85 degrees at the start. i knew my body well, ran it smart b/c i knew i could. slow time, but respectable given the conditions. if i died due to heat, well--no one to blame but myself.

250 people were hospitalized today. WTF????!!!!

did the race directors hold a shot gun to their heads? takes LOTS of idiots to create that kind of load on hospitals and ER rooms when real tragedies need the care of doctors and nurses.

on any other day, would any of these people have chosen to run 26 miles in 90 degree heat?

Nope, I would have eaten the entry fee and then spent a few hundred more on spending the morning with one of Chicago's quality working girls.

What IS it with some of the people who post here? Try to READ here. Thinking will be easier if you have context. "yes" made the claim that the reason for the heat was from Global Warming. It isnt. The heat happening on this day is coincidental. If you had READ my post, you would have seen that I agreed that Global Warming "might" be occurring. I was taking issue about why its happening. Man's influence is insignificant. Why cant you get that when it was clearly stated? Instead, you selectively pull a small grouping of words out of the context of what I wrote and thereby have me saying things different than the post. "try to think here!" learn to read and respond intelligently.

Today is October 8 (the day after the marathon). It's again going to be in the mid to upper 80s in Chicago. Their was another October 8 that say similar temps and it resulted in a famous event .... the Chicago fire of 1871 (no typo) when half the city burned down and 250 people were killed.

We were having global warming 136 years ago?

this is all my fault. if only i could single handedly save the world from global warming. (btw, please buy some carbon credits from my hedge fund)

One hot October day in Chicago certainly provides no significant evidence for global warming, but neither does "Global" equate to "Louisville, KY".

Nope. I meant 1/9th. At the time I posted that, the Trib was reporting that only 4,000 people finished. Look it up. They later corrected it.

Once again, Alan runs a thread into the ground. Nice work.

i think the 24 thousand number was a bit skewed... they were bussing the stragglers to the finish and letting them go through... also they cut the people off and made them cut the course. i don't blame them though. they were way behind and wouldn't have made the allowed time anyways. but if you look at alot of the finishing times in the 4 to 4 1/2 hour range, there are alot of missed checkin times around the 30k and so on.

from the Trib blog, sounds like chaos on what instructions were:

We were near mile 20 for the entire race and saw a lot of chaos with the organizers trying to block participants from continuing by parking a bus in the way of the route, a squad car, then officers. There was a lot of confusion and upset. They finally hit the right tone by giving runners the option to keep going or take a bus back. No matter what you did kudos to everyone who showed up this morning and gave it their best. What a challenge!

I started today, hoping that the heat wouldn't affect me that much. After a mile I knew I was in trouble and chucked my hat. At about 6miles I stopped and took off my singlet hoping that might help. At about 8 miles I called it a day and jogged to half way. I could have one on to run 2:30 but didn't see the point. I'll take another stab at it next weekend in Toronto but I don't blame people for trying to finish it. It's not cheap to fly somewhere, pay for a hotel and restaurant meals and then not actually finish the whole point of the trip.

The race did the right thing by encouraging people to stop. Apparently the timing mat at 30k wasn't working so that could be why there are people who finished but didn't get a 30k time.

The only other really sensible thing the race could have done was start earlier. I'm not sure how hard it would have been to do a 6am start but this might have helped and with everyone picking up their race packs at the Expo they could have had huge signs everywhere saying something to the effect that the race will start at 6am due to the predicted adverse conditions. But weather is tough to predict at the best of times anyways.
