how could she not be confident in her kick leading into sydney??? she ran 357 a few weeks before the olympics (i think a pr) which was definitely the fastest time in the world at that point and may have been the fastest all of 2000. in that race, (zurich maybe, not exactly sure...) she dusted everyone at the end going away. if 357 and a major european win before the olympics don't give you confidence i don't know what can, especially when the person who outkicks you isn't in the competition.

Suzy never did anything of consequence internationally. And she had her chances. Take Regina out of the picture, Suzy is still out of the medals in the big international races. Best American means little when we talk big money in track. Big money goes to the Bruce Jenner, Carl Lewis, Michael Johnson, Marion Jones etc. What do they have in common? Best in the world.

Mary Decker and Regina got paid because they were best in the world or second or third best at worst.

Suzy never made it anywhere near there. Cut the whining. BTW Regina positive test invalidates everything after the test not before. Same deal on Mary Decker. Oh, come on. This is not nearly the same argument. Gorgeous tennis player with several titles including two majors versus gorgeous tennis player with no titles. You don't think looks matter? Try comparing the amount of money made by Anna Kournikova (not a single title ever) versus the money earned by Martina Navratilova (certainly one of the two best in history along with Steffi Graf). I'm not talking career TENNIS earnings, I'm talking about total earnings from tennis + endorsements. Kournikova will blow her out of the water. And Navratilova's career was probably three times as long and she still made less than Kournikova.

We are following the thread, and Kournikova did FANTASTIC endorsement-wise without any big wins. And Suzy was better than Kournikova (higher world ranking for more years), so if being great is so essential to making endorsement $ in running, Suzy would have already cashed in with millions and millions. But why didn't she when Kournikova did, and when Suzy was a better athlete AND better-looking (in my opinion) ?? Because.......(drum roll please) -

No one really cares about women's middle distance running. People care about women's tennis.

Why didn't Suzy make that kind of $, even when she did have some big international wins here and there and was great looking? Again: no one cares about women's middle distance running. Another US title or two would not have made a big difference.

Regina did not cause Suzy to lose 100's of thousands in my opinion. And who knows whether Suzy was 100% clean anyway.

It's also a fact that Suzy could have used some help with her interviews. She was a super simplistic interview. Not the sharpest tack in the drawer and she wasn't that beguiling when she opened her mouth. Not that that hurt her calendar sales.

For someone who had all that talent she accomplished some good stuff. But far short of what she could have. She had a serious amount of competition anxiety that translated itself in full in that Sydney final. In the end she wasn't the total competitor: mental strength was not her strength.

Sir Lance-alot, your logic is terrible. I agree with you that the there is MUCH MORE money to be made in women's tennis than in women's track. Which is why track is only big enough for one huge marketing presence on the women's side, which was Marion Jones for years. However, if Suzy had been the CHAMP, her good looks would have made her much more than Regina made as a champ. However, because nobody cares about women's running, a NONWINNER is not marketable. People care about women's tennis though, so a nonwinner IS marketable. Suzy was great, but not great enough, great for marketing in track means being number 1, you cant market number 2.

Think about what you are saying:

1) People care about tennis, not track.

2) Neither Suzy nor Anna K were the TOP in their sport.

3) Anna still made money because there is enough money in tennis for even a NONWINNER to be marketed.

4) Anna made 10mil without winning, Suzy couldn't because nobody cares about track.

5) Because of this, it is the lack of caring about track, not Regina, that caused Suzy to lose out on money.

Ok, so there are your statements summed up. You realize there IS A HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 10MILLION AND 100'S OF THOUSANDS? Nobody here is claiming Suzy would have 10million, the highest claims have been to a couple million. You are telling me that if Suzy had won the titles Regina cheated her out of that she wouldn't have made $300,000 more in endorsements? That being the undisputed champ year after year as well as possessing great looks wouldn't have made her A FRACTION of what untalented tennis players make. Considering track is a fraction as popular as tennis, I think she would earn a fraction of the money. You do realize 100,000 is 1% of Anna's 2001 earnings. You are saying you don't think Suzy would have made an additional 1-2% of Anna's 2001 earnings with those additional titles under her belt.

Just to advance a contrarian 'what if?' opinion. Suzy was a great time trialer, but a poor racer. In almost every year listed, Suzy had a faster PB than Regina. Suzy had a PR almost three seconds faster than Regina.

The primary reason Suzy lost to Regina was poor race tactics not the drugs in Regina's system. She should have raced like Webb at the Olympic Trials. Put the race away early against the weaker competition instead of always trying to outkick the slower runner with the bigger kick.

If Regina had not been around, Suzy would have won only one or two of the above mentioned championships. And on letsrun, people would be calling Suzy, 'the female Steve Holman', instead of counting the millions she was cheated from by Regina.
