The question becomes can he be top three in his debut marathon? If he runs the trials that should be his goal. I'd say skip the trials if he doesn't think he can. While he hasn't run many long races he's trained like a marathoner...at least in college. He ran a 22 mile training run in 2:03 in college.

Not sure you can really say he trained like a marathoner just because he ran some badass long runs. During cross country, maybe- his higher mileage off of singles was certainly more like a marathoner's training. However, I think he was topping out at about 90 a week (can't recall the exact 'Running with the Buff' info.). I can assure you that his 5k training was and is quite a bit different than marathon training. I still think that the distance is going to be a stretch for him, but I'd love to see him run some 15ks and half marathons.

Just curious, is that Alan Culpepper?
22 miles in 2:03 at 5000+ feet (Wasn't it like 6500 or something?) is definitely fast. However, I don't know as if Goucher is capable of a great time based off his distance PRs. Yes he's run 13:10 and probably could have run faster (ran on injury), but his 10000 PR sucks compared to his 5000, but I guess he has only run a few.
Whatever Goucher decides to do, I wish him luck. I'm happy to see him back on track and still running fast and training hard. Hopefully he can run some PRs this summer.
the real reason goucher is probably running the marathon is his coach alberto salazar and probably his friend culpeper also a former university of colorado runner are tied for the fastest debut marathon by an american 2 hours 9 minutes and 41 seconds and if goucher runs under 20941 he would have bragging rights with his 2 friends. sounds silly, but it happens.
He should debut at the trials if he wants to be on an olympic team. If hes moving to the marathon, wouldnt he want an opportunity to run it at the Oly games? Does he really think he is still going to be competitive in 2012? I mean, he probly wont even make the team in the 5k this time, assuming Lagat goes for it, or Fam decides to concentrate on it. This is not to say that he would really have a prayer of making the team in the marathon this time. I just think he should give it a shot or move up after 08. Of course, he could NYC do it and then still do the 5 or 10k I guess. My whole point is if he ever wanted to be on the oly team for the marathon, now is his only shot.
