Lets not forget that Mottram is focused on the world champs this summer just like all the other top runners in the world. Perhaps he is sharper because he has raced a few times on the track but to say he is peaking just now is just plain ridiculous.

Apparently no one cares that Ivan Heshko ran 4:08, a good 4 seconds slower than Webb.
Lagat is the second fastest 1500 runner of all time. Mottram is the fastest white 5000 runner ever who's close to peak shape.
I'm not going to say Webb will do this or do that. I just wish people would cut him some slack.

Just because it is "summer" down under, that has ZERO bearing on Buster peaking right now...Buster is simply running much better than Webb right now, and hate to say it, think he will continue to do so for quite sometime...
I would LOVE to see Buster VS Webb VS Lagat at Carlsbad this year...prefer watching balls to the wall road racing VS tactical track stuff (for 5K and 10K that is)
What is this about Mottram peaking for the Australia Summer? Do you guy's know what Crap you are talking? Mottram hardly ever runs in Australia these days apart from training at Falls Creek! His closest competition in Australia this season is 13.50 for 5000m which Mottram would jog. He does need to run the Australian Champs in March to make our National body happy but I think he has won the national title in 14mins & 13.50 in the past 2 year! I hardly think he would consider peaking for anything in Australia at this time of the year! Last year was a little different with the commonwealth Games being on in March, that isn't the case this season. I bet he will run Sub 3.32 (1500m) Sub 7.30 (3000m) & who knows for 5000m in the IAAF Golden Leagues this year. Also add in a possible place at world champs in the 1500m & 5000m.

3:54 on this track, is a great time for Feb 2. Both bl and cm have not had many races to sharpen; both want to peak in the summer; look who struggled to break 4 minutes or did not break 4 - they did not go into this race thinking they were not going to break 4; Eamon's time of 3:49 was run at the Meadowlands on a 10 lap per mile track that he help design. In had a fiberglass bounce under the boards on the straights, and more than he had their indoor PR set on this track.
3:54 is a great time indoors.

you mean the Aussies and Kiwis don't even 'run their own season' anymore? sad. I remember when Peter Snell, Ron Clarke, Kerry O'brien, Dick Taylor, John Walker, Rod Dixon, etc, would come run some indoor meets in the US, fresh off their seasons down there and run some very fast times. They would peak twice a year back then, once in Dec-Feb, then go back to base work and then peak again for the June-August season in Europe.

Mottram was in prime form for CWG's last year then pretty much fell apart over the summer. Consistency is not his thing at all. Maybe this year will be different.

Thank the lord someone speaks some reason to these monkeys, the only races Mottram has run this year are indoors in the states. like webb.
Also great point about Heshko.. he will be back running 3.30 1500's in july. but one thinks he is putting somewhat less emphasis on this indoor season than webb appears to be.

It's not like he didn't just go 3:55 last week or anything. Anyone got a list of Mottram's bad performances? Or does that never happen to him?
Webb went with the rabbit, ahead of Lagat and Mottram early. 56.1 quarter. Mottram pushed the pace and fought with Lagat, about 2:58 at the three quarters, with Webb already out of it. Lagat accelerated and dropped Mottram with 80 meters to go.
Webb can never be accused of being the sharpest knife in the tactical drawer. 56 for the 400 on that notorious track? No way that I am writing him off, but that was pure
