Absolutely true. They won't say he's got sub 13 and sub 27 potential because he's not Afican. Because he's white. And because they're brainwashed. Not to mention more than a little jealous.

It seems more likely Hall has a Mark Newow type 10K in him and a Adam Goucher 5K in him.

I think he was eluding to being in shape to run that for a 3k, and running a great 10k.

Why do you think everyone is moving up so fast! They have no chance against the "man". Dathan, Culpeper, Hall, Abdi, Jorge, and Cabada are all striving to make US Marathon Olympic team. They are all following Meb's very smart decision to run the marathon vs 10km in 2004.

London will be interesting if Haile can put it together and run a fast competitive marathon against the world's best. If he does everyone else will be battling for the silver and bronze in China.

See the flocast interview with RH. He admitted he's not a miler/5k runner and was wasting his time at this distance. He should move up the 'thon ASAP. 1) he good at it, 2) he can make some money at it 3) he can medal at this distance.

He won the XC nats last year, no reason to run again. Take the money Ryan! Evantually you'll be in your 30s, your running career will be over, you and Sara will have kids. Then the money will be handy, unless you want to struggle with a running store in Big Bear to pay your mortgage.

This desire to see him run th 10k or less stems from this destructive attitude in American distance running that you should compete at the shortest distance possible and move up to the marathon at the end of your career.

Bob Kennedy threw away a golden opportinity after 96 by never moving up. Ditto Goucher now. Hall's too smart to run to make these same mistakes. He doing exactly the right thing up moving up, as it Ritz Torres, Hartman et. al.

I support him fully--what a talent. However, I think he could risk getting sucked into the "you can run 2:07" frenzy and go out step for step with the experienced Kenyans in Boston and end up pulling a Ritz there and dashing his self confidence.

Don't read me wrong here--Kudos to Dathan. I just think he flirted that one little iota on the wrong side of the effort line (due to lack of marathon experience) and paid dearly. Let's hope we don't see Hall do the same.

that is not what happened at all with Ritz. The race was won in 2:09 with Negative splits. No one in the field went out in under 2:10 pace.

Any chance he would choose London? It is the fastest course and their would be plenty of "pacers" with and ahead of him so he could run a fast time.

Hall may not be a miler or 5k guy, but he has as much speed as Meb ever had and probably more strength for an event like a 10k. He could run as fast as Teg in the 5k (13:05) and probably break the AR in the 10k. Two 13:35's is completely realistic during the track season for Ryan. I don't know how much he makes for breaking an AR, but I wonder if it would offset how much he would make from an appearance fee in the marathon. Probably not even close.

Anyway, someone suggested none of our guys can medal from 1500-10k in Beijing. I would argue that Teg and Webb both have the closing speed to hang with the Africans, and you obviously didn't look at the performance charts in the steeple. Lincoln is as much a threat for a medal as anyone having finished 2006 as the 8th fastest performer... 1.32 seconds shy of being the 3rd fastest. Even Fam in that 1500 (in Rieti) showed he can close with the best, turning a 25 last 200 in a 1500 to run 3:35.

Lukezic has even been a great championship racer and I feel like the 1500 is a wide-open event for someone like him.

Very good point. If he concentrates on the 10000 for the next few years he will run sub 27.

Even though China claims they have started putting restrictions on emissions in the Beijing area, the air will still not be conducive to running a Marathon all out by next year. The race will be a real crap shoot, also it is likely to be very warm as well.

You are 100% correct. That is what is in the best interest of the athlete. However, Ray Flynn is his agent and can not pass up a buck. If Ryan goes your route then he will not receive any appearance money for his marathon debut. Ray will be pocketing 15% of this payday. He will run LA. Mark my words. Dealing with LA he will have the under the table deals with Devine. This makes it easy for Ray to pocket a little more $$ without the athlete ever knowing because Devine is a shaky operation.

We have a winner. Flynn is a known sleaze who would compromise anyone's career for the quick buck. If you have any doubts then examine at Flynn's own competitive career. Fast times year after year, yet in World Champs or Olympic Games he stepped up only once, an 11th plce finish in the 1983 WC. In those days the only time athletes were tested was at those championship events. I'm not saying he's dirty but there but his record sure is suspicious.

Anyone who follows Flynn's advice should think twice.

What he should do is run a track season. Run 27:10 and establish a new american record for 10k. The get big $$ from Chicago (skip the marathon trials). Chicago will be willing to pay in excess of $250k for some american presence with all others running the trials. This would also steal some of the show from NY. Then run the 10k at the Olympics because China is going to be a shitty place to run a marathon anyway. He then has the next 3 years of paydays in the marathon and will only be 28 for the 2012 games.

I believe this is correct. He is our best hope in the 10k right now and has a better chance of making the Olympics in that event than the marathon. The marathon is such a crapshoot, there are only so many elite level marathons in the human body, and the recovery is generally underestimated, leading to the injury/illness/fatigue cycle. I sure hope he focuses on world cross and a stellar track season before he prioritizes anything else.

You know, everyone talks about how Salazar was flying at an early age, running fast marathons after sharpening for the 10k. And exactly how many elite marathons did Salazar run before he crashed? I believe he had about two good years, and then he was done. Sure, he tried to keep it going and ran some solid times, but he was never the same. People underestimate the damage from the marathon distance. Seems like Steve Jones had two years of excellent marathons and then he was done. Very few can race well at the distance over more than a five year period. No reason to rush it.
