Or you could buy a Canadian diamond that wasn't mined through slave labor.

yeah how lame are you...sorry, i make around 190k a year and you know what I just spent on my wife's engagement ring, 1K ---that's right and she couldn't be happier... she did not want diamonds because that is what everyone else has, every lame ass sorority chick who has no originality what-so-everif you need a ring to be happy and you can't just be happy about the fact that the guy wants to marry you then i feel sorry for you and your relationship

I'd rather have a cheaper ring and go on a holiday to spend some time together. That or a combination of giving the rest to charity. I can't imagine many people do that, but it's a good idea.
my wife said those EXACT same things...
we had discussed what rings she liked briefly and said don't waste money on a ring, we'll take an extra weeks vacation on a beach somewhere or she wanted it donated to her favorite animal shelters / peta, etc.

I don't understand the whole 'expensive engagement ring' thing. I bought my wife's engagement ring a year after we were married from a pawn shop for about $100. That was 18 years ago and we are still married and she still wears her ring.
I don't care how rich I was, if my girlfriend picked out a $30K engagement ring, I would dump her. That really says a lot about her character (or lack thereof).

I got engaged six months ago and while I asked for a couple of general guidelines, I did all of the shopping on my own. I found a beautiful classic-looking ring and I scored the most points for my initiative and creativity, not the ring itself. It meant a lot to her that I spent time shopping for "the perfect ring" instead of just asking her to pick something out. And she loved what I bought because I picked it out FOR her.

I agree exactly. And if my girlfriend had said anything like "it has to be bigger, brighter, or more expensive than _____'s ring", it would be over.

When I was about to propose to my wife, I was really nervous because I knew she was very wealthy and I could not afford anything more than the 10k that I had saved over the 2 years prior to me asking. After talking with my father, he assured me that 10k was way more than enough to spend on a diamond, and to focus on quality and cut, not the size.
I got my wife a 1.3 carat round cut on a platinum band with two side diamonds of .3 carats. High quality. I got the stones from a family friend who is a gemologist, and had the ring made in a nice local shop in town.
Anyway, I was still nervous, and thought she would be unimpressed. When I proposed, she was very grateful, and wore the ring for a week. Then she decided she did not feel comfortable wearing that many diamonds, so we went back to my gemologist and downsized her main diamond to .5 carats.
Anyway, I found out after we were married that we had a trust fund that I could not have dreamed would have existed.
My wife is the epitome of class.
If you are picking out 30k diamonds, you have some issues.
I too have been looking at rings with my boyfriend and he mentioned to me that it was suppose to be 2 months salary. I have a size 6 finger and a carat looks too big (in my opinion!). I would think about trying some on if you haven't...b/c...you'll be surprised at how bit it will actually look on your finger. I wanted nothing less than a carat until I actually tried one on...and lets just say it swallowed my bony finger up!

1) Other than when you first show it to people, no one will care one bit what it looks like -- NEVER.
2) Get a good quality if you want, but the vast majority of people wouldn't know by looking at your ring if it were good quality or not -- not even with an eye glass, and who the hell caries one of those around with them? "Excuse me miss, but I saw you walking in the mall -- mind if I closely inspect your engagement ring so I can form an opinion about you and your betrothed?" Also, your ring won't shine like it did on day one unless you clean it regularly. Any woman who regularly cleans their engagement and wedding rings has nothing of value going on in their lives. Take it off if you're doing something where it could be damaged, but to care for it much more than a great once in a while cleaning puts too much value on material things.
3) Anyone who has a ring so big that it makes people gasp is a loser plain and simple. Big ring = small heart and brain. MOST people think that way too, and like it or not, but you'll be labeled a bitch the rest of your married life if you don a large showy ring.
4) Men give women diamond rings to show that those women belong to them. We should stop with this tradition. I favor branding the woman with the man's initials on the ass maybe.

I was had the horrible misfortune of being in a room with about 10 sorority girls when one of them announced she was engaged and showed everyone her ring. I'm a pretty laid back guy, but I seriously thought that I was going to throw up listening to everyone gush about this ring. (no one seemed to care about the upcoming wedding or the actual marriage that she had committed to, only the ring)
Then, and this is even worse, I later heard a couple of the girls totally ripping the newly engaged sister of theirs because the ring looked "cheap" and her fiance must not having been willing to spend enough on her, and etc etc etc.
