World’s Top 100m Times are shown below. Only PR times are shown. Note the big time gap between 9.79 and 9.84. Perhaps 9.84 is the fastest a human can run without doping. Or might it be slower? If Green has doped as many suspect, then Powell has on three occasions run a whopping .07 sec faster than the next fastest clean runner. That would be remarkable. But it’s easy to suspect Powell is doping because his times are so fast.
Does anyone have additional information strongly indicating who is clean or dirty on this list?
9.77:
Asafa Powell, Jamaica (2005 & 2006) - clean?
Justin Gatlin, US (2006) – Tested positive for PEDs
9.78:
Tim Montgomery, US (2002) – Banned for use of PEDs
9.79:
Ben Johnson, Canada (`1988) – Banned for use of PEDs
Maurice Greene, US (1999) – Suspected user of PEDs, in part because his coach is John Smith
Coach John Smith:
Smith admitted taking PEDs when he competed (under oath at the Dubin Inquiry). Smith also had 3 of his athletes suspended for 2 years for using PEDs (Larry Wade in ’05, Mickey Grimes ’04, Torri Edwards ’04). The San Jose Mercury News reported that John Smith signed a non-disclosure agreement with Balco owner Victor Conte Jr. in late 2001.

9.84:
Bruny Surin, Canada (1999) - clean?
Donovan Bailey, Canada (1996) - Bailey is often described as an athlete who "came out of nowhere", understandable given his dramatic improvement in time between 1993 and 1994.
9.85:
Leroy Burrell, US (in 1994)
Olusoji A. Fasuba, Nigeria (2006
9.86:
Carl Lewis, US (1991) – Rumored to have used PEDs
Frank Fredericks, Namibia (1996) -
Francis Obikwelu, Portugal (2004) -
Ato Boldon, US (1998) – Coach is John Smith (see above).
The San Jose Mercury News also reported that Bolton signed a non-disclosure agreement with Balco owner Victor Conte Jr. in late 2001.
9.87:
Linford Christie, Great Britain (1993) -
Obadele Thompson, Barcelona (1998) -
Dwain Chambers, Great Britain (1998) – Banned for use of PEDs
9.88:
Shawn Crawford, US (2004) – Coach is infamous Trevor Graham
9.91:
Dennis Mitchell, US (1991) – Banned for use of PEDs
9.92:
Andre Cason, US (1993) -
Jon Drummond, US (1997) -
Seun Ogunkoya, Nigeria (1998) -
Tim Harden (1999) -
9.93:
Calvin Smith, US (1983) -
Michael Marsh, US (1992) -
Patrick Johnson, Australia (2003) -
Also, does anyone know if Marion Jones in currently under contract with NIKE, or did NIKE drop Marion within this last year? Any website link on this?
If Powell is on some new undetectable steroid...then how come the Americans who are getting busted are so far behind? I doubt they lack the funds, so Im sure they would be all about this new unknown steroid.
Look at his legs. You guys still think his clean?
I'm afraid that as long time fan of athletics I've reached the point where I'm no longer surprised or even care when there is another 'shock' revelation. The sport (among others)is in tatters at the upper levels. Soft punishments like two year bans and potential gains (financial etc) mean that there is always likely to be a number of cheats. To me the sport no longer provokes the emotional response from me that it did when I was a kid. I'm now witnessing nothing more than a show.
I suspect that many more of those who have doubts about Assafa Powell and other athletes who have sub 9.90 are just worn down by the line line of exposed cheats. The chances are tests are missing more than a couple of others.
The UKA inclusion of Dwain Chambers in the European Champs Team appointment of Linford Christie and other countries inclusion of athletes in teams post bans only undermines any clean up.
For me I'll keep running, posting and from I'm going to watch something less suspect like Gaelic Football
Well said. I will continue to watch track and field- I still ove the competition, but the doubt will always be there.
He is Dirty...He pull out last year every chance he could..or finish in a place where he wouldn't be tested...The sucky showing in 2004 was for a reason he knows when not to Juice....Every Jamicain who runs track know he's Juice'n up...
2-4 tenths faster. umm hundreths.
also gateshead was his peak. crappy track in the UK. smashed the UK all comers record by a tenth. he had been training through the races before that and just biding his time for his show down with gatlin. and gatlin pulls out cause he would of been raped. 9.77 at gateshead is the most impressive race of all time over 100m with 88 seuol being a close second. and mo green 9.79 with still wind 3rd.
zurich was slower on his part but the same time becasue of outside factors: the track was harder. better field. better weather for sprinting(only marginally but its down to hundreths).
surin and bailey had the same coach... doping is ussally on higher level than just the athelte.
burell was in lewis' camp. lewis did use PED's. 88 oly trials he tested postive for ephedra(a drug is a drug right). USADA buried the test for 15 years.
wasn't frankie with HSI? but he was a BAMF and idk if he used drugs.
fasuba is a BAMF and i am not ready to sell him out as a cheat just yet and the inside story behind his 9.85 in Doha is reasonable. he had a fever which basicly "dialted" his nervous system for the one race but screwed him over after. still the wind reading is a little shaky for doha. it was prob legit but did he use drugs? thats the question at hand. also his dramatic fall off the rest of the season: 10.37 at african champs can probably be attributed to a spider bite that caused a softball sized abscess.
franny is another tough case. i'd like to think he's clean. 10.1 as a juniors sprinter rail. thats talent. i'd like to think he could shave the other quarter of a second in a decade of training and getting bigger naturally.
obadale probably used. its hard to imagine someone being an 8.7 long jumper and 9.87 100m guy clean.
as for the guys above 9.90 most of them are clean.
I guess you forgot about all his "injuries" the previous two years where he wouldn't make it to the end of the season. Kind of convenient when all the big meets are then with all the major testing.
awesome my thread got on the front page :)
But honestly. Anybody notice the pattern? Gatlin pulling out of meets - got with drugs. Marion pulls out of meet for personal reasons - got with drugs.
The number of times Powell has gone sub-10 this year, as well as the length of his peak makes him highly suspect in my mind. But anyone who dominates the 100 meters to the extent Gatlin, Jones and Powell have from now on is going to be suspect. I will no longer consider that type of domination a natural phenomonon.
