If 100 miles is not run in less than 11:45, then they are going at a jogging pace.
That is just a fact, not an opinion about how they compare to a college runner completing 5 miles in 25:00.

Isn't Adams State in the RMAC? I think they have had some good runners. Didn't one of them win the xc champs a few times?

Pathetic thread... didn't take long for another batch of immature letsrun posters to quickly rip both DII (Western State) and ultrarunning (Western States) in the same thread. I just don't get all the hate on letsrun. People wonder why non-runners don't often respect us, yet we don't even respect our own.
Never thought I'd see the day that the mellow ultrarunner crowd would start trolling threads, but then this is Letsrun.com after all so no one should be surprised.

Johnny H Utah may be an ass but he knows what he is talkinga about. Google the Divine Madness group. They were in many of the nation's newspapers a few years ago. Sports Illustrated had an article on them too. Clay Evans did an excellent, award-winning expose piece about them in the Boulder Daily Camera about eight years ago. That would be a real eye-opener if someone posted a link.
The Divine Madness cult leader Mark Yousefmanian (spelling??) something or other was also known as "YO". He practiced mind control (very hostile, verbally abusive) of his members, cut them off from their families, assigned members sex partners among oneanother (borderline rapes in some cases), ordered food deprivation for his "athletes", made them do seven hour runs at 13-14 minute/miles every weekend around the Boulder Reservoir, Mesa Trail and East Boulder Trail. They compete in top-level ultra races regularly.
One time the wife of an international class (real) runner in Boulder picked up a couple of them members and they were so delerious from some 40-mile run they were hallucinating. She found them staggerng along the highway 36 out toward Lyons somewhere and out of mercy gave them a ride into town. That YO character looked and acted a little like Charles Manson. He eventually left Boulder for a "compound" in Reserve, N.M. (when his outfit got discovered in Boulder he was basically run out of town by the negative publicity).
They were definitely a very strange bunch and they would often try to "recruit" local runners in Boulder at places like the Trident Cafe. I don't know if someone would assume they are posting on here (wouldn't surprise me though) but they do have some of the best ultra runners in Boulder who DO run the Western States race so it could very well be them posting on here.
Hope that sheds some light for you.
Yeah, but comparing all ultra runners to the Divine Madness group is nothing more than simple ignorance or someone just trying to get a reaction by the ultra crowd.
As for those ripping Western State (not States) and the RMAC, I bet none of you are fast enough to win a RMAC conference title in XC or track.
Back to the original question on the thread, I agree with those that said Western will tough to beat once again. Vandenbushe is a good coach, but an even better recruiter and I'm sure he's got plenty of able bodies training in Gunnison right now. The bigger question is whether or not Chico (or anyone else) can break up the Western/Adams domination of DII?

I respect what ultra runners can do (but see no attraction to doing it, but hey, it's a free world), but stop crapping on Western State U. It is without a doubt one of the best programs in the nation, regardless of division. If you're crapping on it, you are either:
1. ignorant
2. a very insecure d I runner
3. a very good d I runner with a serious attitude problem
there are only a handful of teams each year who are beyond Western's class. get over yourselves. 6 of the last 7 Div II titles.
I'd like to be the first person in a while to actually give a comment on the original question. If Western State is like a lot of other top programs, losing a bunch of top guys usually just means we'll be seeing new faces stepping up in their places. Schools led by effective recruiters and coaches never seem to have problems reloading.
P.S. If the thread maker meant Western States 100, don't you think he would have written Western StateS instead of Western State? I don't get the confusion since they don't even have the same name.

In my line of work, Western State College is held in VERY high regard. They have a tremendous program, and it has been that way for many, many years.
On the other hand, the average sports fan, and yes, even the average runner probably hasn't heard of them.
To chime in with my 2¢ worth, I can see how this topic would be (accidentally) misleading. You don't normally ask if a school is "done," but it's rather common to make the same inquiry about a race.
Back to my original point from my first post, Western State may very well be a fantastic D-2 school, but I'm not sure that they would be too thrilled to know that foul-mouthed immature bozos like Johnny H Utah are trying to serve as their spokesman!
I'm still trying to get the PRs from the poster on this board. He can trash Western State all he wants, until he posts his PRs and we'll seee if he could crack the top five.
That said, I can see how someone could mix up the two events, but I know very few people who have heard of either Western State College or Western States Ultra Marathon, or whatever it's called.
Actually, most people have no clue who Wejo, Lagat, Tergat, Tekenkamp, Goucher, Lincoln, Webb. etc., are. People on this board have a glorified sense of their sport.
I also see why people don't like runners: Just read this board.

OK, at least you gave a hint at your talent. If you're that good, why is Western State even entering your mind one iota? Runners are odd ... at least American ones are.
I would say Western State and Adams State would do quite well in many mid-major D-I conferences. For schools with limited scholarship money, they attract pretty darn good talent.
I also don't think Western State and Adams State -- two pretty small and remote colleges -- are claiming that they can beat CU, Arkansas, Oregon, etc.
This board does crack me up. Gotta be the only place where a Division III part-time/low pay opening for an X-C coach is scrutinized to death, and the runners just don't understand why John McDonnell isn't leaving Arkansas to go coach at a school with no scholarships.
I also don't understand these D-I runners getting all uptight about D2 schools, or thinking they're all that when few people in the world even know who they are.
Western State is as good as a Cal Poly, Georgetown or Arizona/Arizona State level of program if they were D1. Certainly very, very respectable.
As for the Divine Madness crowd, the word in Boulder is they have a few members who do like to post on here a lot so it wouldn't surprise me if they stirred the pot on here.
