WOW!
I moved out of one state to another and for some reason the average IQ in the old state I moved from went up and the new state went down. Odd coincidence!

youre an idiot, of course those schools cant bring up an entire states average IQ. it would be possible on the other hand for boston to have a slightly higher IQ due to all the colleges in the area, not just harvard.
and the person who mentioned that it seems impossible for some states to have whole populations more than one standard deviation from the mean, congrats you are smart. smart people like you are a welcome relief. these stats are clearly either made up or gathered incorrectly. statistically speaking there is little to no chance the distribution would look like it does in those results. im more liberal than almost anyone on here and i believe as a whole, liberals are smarter than conservatives (not all of them, but generally speaking) but there is no way that IQ list is correct. i am not going to look up stats, but seeing i dealt heavily with demographic studies in a few courses in college and i do remember seeing quite a few studies that indicated among the college educated dems out numbered reps about 1.6:1, and the ratio grew higher with more education. republicans arent stupid, but higher education is a value more commonly associated with the liberal lifestyle, as well as the fact that nearly 80-90% of the profs at top schools are liberal. if you come from an HYP type place, its almost hard not to be swayed liberal (if you go in without strong convictions either way) by the abundance of liberal profs. there are studies out there too, you all can look them up, im not doing it, but they indicate an almost 80-90% rate of democrats among profs at top universities (i believe they gathered the data on profs that contributed to a campaign, so its not exactly foolproof data).
This is an interesting discussion with some insightful posts. Though, I don't know how a state's average IQ number has much meaning without knowing where the numbers come from. I know I've never been IQ tested, and I can't imagine many of the students in my state who don't go on to college would be tested outside some study I haven't heard about.
That being said, I'm not sure you need to compile average intelligent quotients to see that coastal states tend to have more sophisticated economies and that their residents are more technologically savy than other states in the union. Square this to the political blue/red map and you have similar voting trends. This of course doesn't take into account who is actually getting to the pols on Election Day.
A previous poster brought up racial trends, and he/she would most likely be right about average minority IQ's being lower than the national average assuming a strong correlation with lower levels of education and the quality of schools that serve minority districts in this country. Of course, NY (city at least) and CA have very diverse populations and vote overwhelmingly blue. Southern states have a large black minority (who lean democratic 9:1) but vote red. The main problem here (among others) is equating a states racial makeup with a state's likely voters. I would guess the percentage of registered and regularly voting minority citizens is below the national average which would skew any correlation of these two factors.
Since we're all in the same boat together, many of these differences shouldn't matter all that much, unless you're a politician. An American that is willing to believe anything their political party or representative tells them needs to go down to the library and do some reading on the political history of our Nation.

There's no way something like this can be at all accurate so it's pretty pointless. The states with more college population have a major advantage. Wyoming for instance only has 1 real 4-year college in the entire state so that hurts them quite a bit. Also states with major academic colleges (Ivy League schools, etc.) have a major advantage in how this poll comes out. That's just one example of why this stat is pretty ridiculous though.
When you've got to break out the snopes.com you know things have gone terribly wrong:
Hooray for me once again being one of the smartest people here. Some of you assholes got all in a tizzy by that chart, but in reality youre just f***tards that cant think for yourselves.
I told you those results were in no way real. That being said, studies have shown liberals to be more educated and to value education moreso than conservatives. This DOES NOT mean us liberals are smarter, it simply means what it says, we are more educated as a group. If you all want to see some of these studies, get your ass on google scholar or take some pysch classes at your school. They are out there, Im just not looking up the exact figures...
The California score is way off. You need to add all the illegal immigrants to get the true score. Then we are talking maybe top 45, not top 15.
What makes you think that illegal immigrants have low IQs? Is it just that you assume that they aren't educated? You must agree with me that education does not equate with intelligence. I'd bet that you laugh at the stupidity of politicians as much as the next person but politicians are generally very well educated.
You should respect illegal immigrants, assuming that you are a young person, like most of the people on this site, today's illegal immigrants will have tremendous influence over your life in years to come.

Exactly. Because what could "ed-u-cation" possibly have to do with being smart? Absolutely nothing, right? (only a crazy person would think education and intelligence could be related at all, right?)
I think that blue collar slob (and likely Republican...he often bashes those "lousy Democrats") Homer Simpson puts it best in agreeing with you-
Homer: Oh, who am I kidding? I _am_ slow.
Marge: Oh, Homey, if you feel so bad about yourself, there's always
things you can do to feel better.
Homer: Take another bath in malt liquor?
Marge: There's that...or you could take an adult education course.
Homer(sacastically): Oh, and how is (makes quotes signs) "education" supposed to make me feel smarter?
Besides, every time I learn something new, it pushes some old
stuff out of my brain. Remember when I took that home wine-
making course and I forgot how to drive?
Marge: That's because you were drunk!
Homer: And how.
Um, they already do. Furthermore, the scores the poster mentioned are for current test scores. My guess, if you took all the illegal immigrants and gave them an iq test, the average for the Golden State would go down.
Come out to the greater LA area, visit the schools, and then tell me you think the scores would go up. Do you really believe that?
And generally, the better the education the higher the iq test score. So yes, I am guessing that illegal immigrants that were failed by their own Mexican government, forced to fend on their own, and generally lacking what Americans generally view as a good education, would definitely score worse on an iq score.
Dude, seriously, you think illegals would make the score better?
Be serious with us now, are you from West Virginia or Mississippi?
The polls listed are misleading if not made up all-together. You can't look at the results and say "Texas voted Republican and their average IQ is 97 so they are dumber than the Democrats from New Hampshire"
That deduction is seriously flawed. If Texas were to send all of our blacks and hispanics to New Hampshire, it would take a huge dive to the bottom of the list but would still vote Democrat. Texas on the other hand would move into the top 5 on the list.
New Englanders live in a protected bubble and never get to see firsthand how so many poor minorities abuse the welfare system. I know welfare is not just minorities, but ironically they make up the majority on welfare. Of course Democrats would love to see them stay poor and on welfare because they would have no voter base without them.
Sounds like just another dumb Republican to me.

This is right on. When the people in your state are mostly white middle class or better its one thing. We in the South recognize we have a failing education system. Do you know why? Its this hot button issue you see called slavery. You think in 40 years you can reverse 2 centuries of damage? No way man. I live in a county where if you face one way you see a city that makes this state the 12 highest economy in the world, as just a state, and then when you face the other way you see poor whites, blacks, latinos, all liveing in abject poverty. We are screwed up down here, thats our culture and anybody who is a socioligist, historian, teacher, geographist, whatever will tell you that. Doesn't mean everybody here is stupid, or even everybody is Republican, what it means is that we have a strugling education system that is continually part of the vicious cycle of growing up in the south.
oooh...you got me with that "original" thing, huh little tex? Let me guess, am I brainwashed by the NYTimes, is that it?? But you Repubs with your Fox news, you guys are just ALWAYS spewing out original thoughts, huh?? Like "cut and run Democrats", and "tax and spend liberals" and "soft on terror", and "far-left PC college professors," etc, etc ,etc, ad nauseum.
Yeah, Repubs are VERY original with their comments in general. Suuure.....
(let's leave it at this: I agree that having an education doesn't make one necessarily that bright, because your hero and leader George Dumbya has degrees from two of the best schools in the world and is one of the dumbest people I have ever heard speak. So....so much for education, on that we agree, right? $ is all that really matters, huh?)
Cletus & Brandine I agree with you there...I was just bring up a point maybe some people have never thought of. To BigTex you make the claim you make would imply you think only the Blacks and Mexicans have low IQ's in your state. Well there are plenty of retarded white Texans in your state, you can't throw the blame all on minorities. Besides,if you got rid of all the minorities, Texas's economy would flounder under its own weight. I generally dislike Texans because of pompous, better than the rest of the country views like yours.
On a happier note I did once get pulled over a road trip doing 30 over on some road in northern Texas. Cop let me off with a warning...nicest Texan I ever met.

Oh dear, is that the line they feed you these days? So what do Republicans want for them? To stay poor but be OFF welfare because they're not their voter base anyway.
GOP Moron says: Let's just ban poverty, then everybody will be rich.
BigTex wrote:

is this true? it may be the case that all minorities combined make up the majority on welfare (whatever you mean by that phrase) but if you combine all minorities together in many areas of the country, including the entire state of california, they are the majority of people. so it would not necessarily be disproportionate to have minorities be a majority of welfare recipients.
i haven't looked at the numbers in quite some time, but when i did, whites were still the majority of the recipients of public assistance. there are lots of poor white folk out there. you just don't see them on tv as much for some reason.
That's why I'm not talking about the folks I see on TV. I live in an area where I see it all first hand. Are you one of those New Englanders who's only experience with minorities and poor people is what you see on TV?
The most recent statitics I saw put blacks at just over 40% of welfare recipients even though they only make up 12% of the population. Whites were 36% yet make up 77% percent of the population.
Liberals will continue to deny the facts because it's bad business for them. Who else is going to vote for you when you have no purpose but to hate the Republican party. When you have nothing else to stand for, it's easier to go say to a bunch of uneducated people in New Orleans that President Bush caused the hurricane and blew up your levy so you would all be stuck here.
