i spent the majority of my 20s in SF and i couldn't disagree more. unless you have a high paying AI job FIRST don't bother.
love life? the city is a sausage fest. dating is tough because the market is over saturated with men.
financials? cost of living is one of the highest in the nation. tax burden is also one of the highest in the nation
qol? in SF proper, poor to abysmal. even in "nice" neighborhoods be ready to dodge human refuse. used condoms on my car, uncapped used needles in the safeway parking lot, NO THANKS!
culture? i mean i guess if you like the vapid emptiness that is tech-bro culture then yeah you're in for a treat.
I lived here 2 years. I understand everything your'e saying and think they're valid criticisms except for the dodging human refuse part.
This isn't LA: or 2000-2022. Homeless taking over the city really isn't an issue. If you're in a residential part of town it's a minor issue. Where did you live? I'd say anything west of Van Ness homelessness is barely an issue.
Housing is crazy expensive but that's because there is limited supply.
I think what shocked me coming from LA was just how condensed SF is. I definitely had a bit of a shock my first time getting off the train to work in Soma the first time but honestly, having seen some of Downtown LA over the years it isn't anything crazy and much less dangerous than everyone outside would make it out to be (just watch where you step!). But the fact that the whole of the city can be raced through in a 12k annually is still crazy to me. The interesting thing for me has also been exploring the wider bay area and checking out places in Marin or random little spots in San Mateo county. Coming from the giant, sprawling metro area that is LA it's been cool to have a fairly condensed metro area and then have the option to expand out into the more suburban sprawl across the bridges.
Also, it is so green here! I'd been running through Griffith Park down south for decades and had grown pretty tired of the burn-scarred hillsides, sparse oaks, and coastal scrub brush. The redwood forests have been a literal breath of fresh air and amount of green space within the city itself is actually insane for how packed in SF is.
