I reached out to Phanuel Koech's agent Eric Lilot and got an explanation for why he hasn't raced this year. He had some pain in his fibula following a cross country race in January. It was eventually diagnosed as a stress fracture and he spent the next few weeks/months getting treatment. He's back training now and the plan is to race in July.
I also asked about Nelly Chepchirchir. He couldn't really give me an answer on that one but he said it's not a doping-related absence.

Thanks Jon, wonder if we'll see Koech in that London DL again. I guess we'll see if Chepchirchir shows up either at Kenyan Trials for Comm Games or the Paris/Doha DL meets. Not much else to run for otherwise I'd think, but there's been more than enough time to rack up DL points/secure ranking for World Ultimate, and making Comm Games of course could be a target.

Thank you for the update Jon. The Discovery Kenya XC was on 25 Jan. Jakob had his achilles surgery in early Feb, I wonder if both return at the Gyulai István Memorial (Hungarian Athletics GP) on July 14 - both a 1500 and 3000 there. I guess no Comm Games this year for Phanuel though unless he somehow gets given a spot like last year for Worlds

I was wondering if Claudio’s athletes just don’t do the Commonwealth Games as much. No Kipkemboi, Wanyonyi in the last one despite both qualifying. Small sample size but both were likely medalists.
