Ian,
thats pretty impressive---i'd like to challenge that record.

A lot of liars on this board. 20 pullups are very, very difficult to do. I even call BS to every claiming to do 20 chin-ups. If you're just running everyday with 0 days devoted to upper body work- which I would apply to 98% on this board.[/quote]
I agree 20 pull ups are very hard. I can't do one. I have done 25 chins just not all the way down; I go for a greater than 90 degree on the arms and chin above bar. A good bar with the right diameter high enough so you don't have to bend your knees helps a lot. Venice Beach california had 3 perfect ones! I was discussing this with a very buff workout guy and he said he could do 30. I bet him $20 he couldn't and he was very sloppy after 15 and done before 20. we used to do them after track workout indoors and 20 chins isn't that common but not that hard. If you haven't spent a bit of time , then you are right no way.
I will take the 20 chin bet anytime in T.O.!
Not that anyone will believe me, but I can generally do a few sets of 20-25, but I'm usually doing weighted pull ups (put a special weight belt with a chain around my waist and hang anywhere from 25-45 pounds from my waist). I generally perform somewhere in the neighborhood of 3-5 sets of 6-10 of these.
You should note that I'm not really a distance runner at all anymore. I've been big into lifting for a few years now. I can also guarantee that a lot of people on this board are overestimating how many they can do.
i agree. there are a lot of liars and BS on these boards, but just because you're a runner and have trouble doing a real pull up, doesn't mean that other runners have the same problems.
most runners don't have a whole lot of upper body strength, and are mentally challenged when it comes to stuff like this. often times that's the barrier and not the lack of stregnth or muscle. heck, i've seen some pretty scrawny runners have a lot of power and strength.
Again, not that anyone will believe this.... but my younger brother did 63 pull-ups in a row (I witnessed it), and has done 1 with 3 plates (135 lbs) hanging around a weight belt.... can bench 360 too.
As a runner, he ran a 1:56 in college, but now-a-days runs in the low 17's for a 5k (and can still break 5 pretty easily in the mile... while being able to lift all that weight).
Obviously he focuses a ton on weight lifting, but can still win (or come close) some local 5k's.

a true pull up starts from a full hang (with forward facing wide grip). the correct motion consists of a controlled pull using your back (not arms), so that your body weight and legs stay underneath you (not in front of you). you should finish with your neck slightly higher than where your grip is.
Exactly, and these are not easy.
This is why I am having a little trouble believing the reps of 20 that everyone is claiming.
Yes, I'm talking about pullups....
I can do 24 full pulls on a good day (I'm a rock climber), but when I was doing my best long-distance running I could MAYBE do 5. I do have a better 400/800 now, thanks to improved upper body strength.
Also, Pullups are a function of lever arm; a small guy with short arms will have a big advantage (think 5'6" gymnast). I am 6'0" with a 0" "Ape Index" (meaning my armspan is also 6'0").
Where I could really put distance on most guys, even gymnasts, is fingertip pullups!
everyone except the guy who said he could not do any is full of shit on this this board
don't be jealous
you're just a puny girly man
Why would people lie? Everyone posts anonymously.

Yeah, I used to climb at the same gym as Tommy Caldwell. I think that guy can do as many pullups as he wants to. His back is freakish. Have you ever seen the video of Fred Nicole doing the one-pinky "pull up"? The dude is hanging by one pinky from a loop of webbing and does a pull-up.
Agreed, rock climbers over time develop incredible strength in their forearms and fingers. A world class rock climber probably could to a few reps of SINGLE arm pullups- if any distance runner claims that they can do one single arm pullup.... let's see if someone makes that outrageous claim.
i'm not at all, i'm one the biggest 16 minute 5ker's i've ever seen at any race i've been to, i lifted for years before i took up running - that is how i know most on this board are full of crap

you guys are tards... being a strong climber has very little to do with how many pull-ups you can do... sure it helps but it isn't needed... ive seen girls that can barely do 7 pull-ups climb 5.13's...
then you definitely are a girly man---16 minute 5k? what a joke.
One!
Girls doing 7 pullups? and you're not impressed?
I have a bar hanging on a chain from my back patio. I usually do a set of 10 on that. The most I've done on that is 12. I know I'm cheating when the bar starts swinging. On a regular bar, my best is 15 or 16, but the last ones were pretty ugly, so maybe 14 good ones.
I don't find 25 that hard to believe because I am fairly fat as far as runners go (5'11", 170 lbs) and don't have great strength and have fairly long arms.
Maybe all you guys trying to call BS should go out and do some 2-3 times a week and you won't be so weak.
PS, there is a kid on my track team who can do 18 muscle ups (a pull up, then levering yourself up so that you are above the bar with your weight on your hands and the bar at the waist)
Maybe I'll video it for you and post to youtube so all you non-hackers can belive.
I believe this is what you are referring to:

I do these quite a bit at my gym and get very strange looks.
