At that time i don’t think any coaches were turning away walk-ons and didnt care if they did the work or not. It’s unlikely Dellinger spent time judging the efforts of about 20 guys that had about a 1% of making the team. Pat Tyson and Boileau were the only walk-ons that I heard had made a team during the ‘70s.

I’m pretty sure that Dellinger invited Boileau to join the workouts and didn’t tell him to do so.

Everyone complains about the ncaa. Who specifically do you mean? The ncaa is a rather weak admin structure that runs as a non profit and only exists to set up schedules, rules, and playoffs. The ncaa actually has no agenda.

Lived in Eugene from 1999 until 2018. For the first few years I was there, Hayward Field was open to the public 24/7 (except for meets/practice, of course). It was great. Show up at 10 p.m and run a few miles in the dark. Quite magical. Then slowly, the restraints began. Began with barriers blocking the first few lanes, then time closures, then locked gates. (Remember Martin Smith kicking me off the track one day.) It was really great when the July all-comer meets were there. Then that stopped--moved to South Eugene HS. Really a shame.

Agree. South Eugene is an excellent track. I loved it. Spent hundreds and hundreds of hours training there. Some of my fondest memories of Eugene are of that track and the Amazon bark trail just across the street. Key memories: witnessing Albert with HS'er Rupp and a solo 8:40 something two mile. Andrew Wheating leading the eggnog mile for school kids. Watching 50 yr old South Eugene coach, Jeff Hess run a 60 flat 400m in sandels. Chatting with Centrowitz, Robbie Andrews, and watching Ritz train alone with his Mom present. Meeting Harry Mara and Ashton Eaton. So many sweet memories.

Unrelated to this thread, but the area high schools + LCC all have very good tracks

I was a walk on myself and year 2 starting to catch up with Boileau and broke an ankle, and that was a wrap. I could see getting to that level, but too much higher was speculative and being a broke runner to do so, I was there for the education. choice made.
