Didn't Abdi have better times at every distance when he made his 2:17 debut at NYC?

Yes. I watched that year from the half-mile-to-go point, which Abdi passed at about Oprah pace. I doubt he was satisfied with the day's result, which is what I'm disagreeing with Irishguy about, not whether good runners sometimes have poor debuts. (Of course some do.)
Ha ha, Oprah pace, I like it.

He will give us one soon. He first needs to clean himself up from er.... celebrating this auspicious news.
Bravo for Ritz. He can run in the 2:09-2:10 the first time out. He has better times than Alberto over 5K and 10K when Alberto debuted in 1980. Plus the course is actually faster at the end now that they enter the park at 90th st instead of 102nd. Assuming no injuries/setbacks he will run a solid time provided he doesn't run over his head. Can't wait to see!!!
Is Ritz scared of shorter distances? He's too young to be doing marathons.
The progression should be:
1. track (up to late 20s or early 30s)
2. roads (starting from late 20s or early 30s).
When you still are young, you must traing for speed and build that.
People who have followed this path:
1. Haile
2. Tergat.
'NUFF SAID.
So, the only reason is that Ritz is a p*ssy and got scared out of his fragile tibias when Webb, the miler, kicked his *ss at 10k. So, make the next logical step and hide from Webb by doing the marathon...
good move Ritz, let's see how long you'll stay injury free.

Didn't Al Sal debut there in 2:09 also? Maybe it was Boston. Just looking at his stride and his toughness the marathon looks like his best event, hopefully he'll get a fast 1/2 in before hand too.

Prediction made in the other Ritz NYC thread.
2:09:48
'The progression should be'. What if the marathon is his best event? Why not try it and see, it shouldn't break him completely.
Salazar's debut was in NY and I believe it was 2:09:41, a year before he won 2:08:13.
I can't help think Ritz's fragility is a concern, but I wish him the best.
If he runs his own race and does not try to go for the win 2:10:00 +
Here is a counter point to your argument, Khalid Kannouchi. He didn't stick to track and did quite well for himself in the marathon. The same holds for many Japanese runners. Remember running is an individual sport and different people have different needs and talents.
Will he beat BK's NYC PR?
People talk about Ritzenhein's fragility. I think this fragility is just the result of not having enough time at sea level(not at altitude) to recover and absorb his training better, meaning he was constantly 'redlining' it. Many top athletes don't spend as much time at altitude as he has, but only use it a stimulus for a period of weeks before moving on to lower altitude conditions. When he starts doing this, his strength will really show, and no one will talk of him having any kind of fragility when he is winning marathons.
To the above poster who said that Ritz should wait until his late 20's or early 30's to be doing this:
Many top African runners start competing early at the marathon. Gebreselassie ran a marathon when he was 19 or 20. Whether it is really because it is theoretically their best event or because they just really need/want the money bad, it works out well for them. And if you read the thread where Canova talks about how long it takes to train for the marathon before you're at your full potential for it, it takes about 6 years to get there. So I think it's a good idea for him to start now, so that when he's 29 or 30, he'll really be kickin some butt.
Ritz, get your butt away from sea level and your problems will go away. Rockford got plenty of hills for you!!! Jericho street.....crap!!
i ran a marathon in 2:46 and my mile p.r is 5:06........and i have never run over 10 miles on my long runs..........
ritz cure easily break 2:11.
why wait until he older...he should do it now.......cause i cure see him running 26 miles at 4:45 easily

Are you sure he couldn't run 26 miles @ 4:35, but then pass out with 0.2 to go and never finish? Somebody has to be Gerry's record!
DNF
'Don't you know who you are dealing with??? A man trained to ignore pain! A man who can run up hills that would make a billy goat puke (sic)'
As a fan, I am thrilled about this development.
You know what I wish? OK, I'll tell you.
I wish he would go back to Michigan for the next 5 months and train with the Hanson group. He could be the rock star of the group. He'd have a real good team to train with. He'd be back to his roots and stomping grounds. He'd be like the Bill Rodgers of the GBTC.
It'd be a different slant on Cassidy in the cabin in the woods.
Crazy? So crazy, it just might work.

The Trials would not be on the same course....
