I hate the trolls who milk others Hosteen Cows. They troll in and advertise their websites and then answer the posts themselves. They creating phony controversies and coincidentally include the links they want us to click on. They feed off of the success of Letsrun.com and others websites. That's another twist on live2run.com tactic.
So you're saying Lets Run is a Holstein cow? Well, my good friend, if Letsrun.com is a Holstein then I am a Giant Cave Troll, you know, like on Lord of the Rings...
Look, here is the sour milk. I am co founder of two websites and this type of Cave Trolling happens everywhere. There is no easy way to stop it. You just hope your readers can detect the Holstein Bull Shit.
Marathonguide.com needs to give a link back to the official source and remove frames.
In the grand scheme of things these sites are here to advise and inspire and I for one appreciate the effort.
The only way we can make money is to write reports from the comforts of our living room. That's why the sites you mention use flash quotes, flash interviews, on-site public relations, and results issued by the meet organizers. We process the information gathered, sumarize it, and add a hundred words of our craft. Thats the news business. I can't send my staff to each meet, road race, marathon. We don't have any major sponsors or advertisers for our magazine, and we have to rely on our travel tours business to make ends meet. If we quoted every source, we'd have a series of citations a half page long at the end of each story. Do you want to be bored with that. We have long suffered from assault from web oriented correspondents who have a network of volunteer staff reporting on location at meets. But they have limited knowledge of track and field, unlike us. Pick your poison.

On the other hand, it doesn't seem as though anyone is misrepresenting where the article's from--it very clearly says New York Times on it, and down at the bottom it even says "Copyright 2003 The New York Times Company." Consequently, I'm not sure what the harm is, or why this is even an issue to you. Never seen someone troll their own website before.
Runners World should be forced to change their name to "Sellout World"......when their cover stories show models and stories like "how to get washerboard abs", it's time to move on.
This is definitely a sketchy practice. But of course so is taking misspellings of marathon names and web sites, registering the domain names, and having them forward to your own site. I'm not sure what side of the law it all falls on, but John Elliott obviously likes to walk that line. He's gotten in trouble for other things like this in the past as well.
His web site should be able to stand on its own. He shouldn't have to resort to sketchy tactics such as these to get more hits, attention, or whatever it is he's looking for.

It seems to be that the messages attacking Trackshark and TracnandFieldNews are libel and that they nature of the attack is also covers by the Lanham Act because it has commercial implications. IANAL, but just because the poster is taking anonimity does not absovle him/her of the potential legal consequences of the posting. BTW, TB, thanks for your efforts with TrackShark and your occasional posts on TracandFieldNews.

Which site was this? Nearly every site that puts up a press release says its a press release I think.
I heard from a reliable source at COSIDA that trackshark was denied access at Texas Relays.

I agree. At least T&FN tries. They fail miserably with late and inaccurate stories and steal material. Trackandfieldphoto has butt pictures and is run by a retired bozo UCLA prof. AT&F is a shoe catalog with articles written by amateurs. RW doesn't even try to fake like they know anything. The RW race pictures always sucked from way back, now RW doesn't even have any race pictures or just little point and shoot pictures. What are they thinking.
Be nice. I like all the web sites since they are all run by athletes and coaches in their spare time. When I used to compete, I liked talking with the USATF photographer who is an athlete, fireman, coach, and does the website for all of us, totally for free. I became a coach, and official too after my days in the spotlight. If I could take good pictures, I'd pick up a camera. Those guys spend $50,000 of their own money on equipment, and pay for all their own travel, interview athletes in the snow and rain, write articles after a long day a work, just for you and me and the rest of the track and field world. So lay off will yah guy ;-)
